  1. ugh, damn you stupid cobs... how could you pick ______ with _______ still on the board
  2. competent coaching by the cubs' minor league staff???
  3. if we don't pick wieters, and Price is gone, I want Moustakas. After that I don't really give a crap... we won't take Porcello, Parker will blow out his arm if we draft him, and Vitters will be a bust.
  4. Yeah, but at least in '03 and '04 the Cubs were interesting for the entire year. I mean last year, what the hell was there to root for after the middle of May? The team was a joke, the manager and GM were a joke, there weren't a lot of exciting young players... really, the last three months of the year I rarely paid attention except when Rich Hill was on the mound. I love baseball, and the longer I can stay interested in the season, the better. Hell, if I were a Red Sox, Yankees or Braves fan I'd be interested through September almost every year. With the Cubs, you're to be in the race one out of every five. It's embarrassing and pathetic.
  5. He's 18 and posted an .894 OPS at low-A as a 17-year old last season. Thank you. I think most people fail to understand how incredible that is. Scouting well and at least holding his own in leagues way too advanced for his age is a great combination. So Zambrano for Milledge and Martinez, with Milledge or Pie then going to the Marlins with Veal, Murton, and anyone else they want for Cabrera. entire cubs organization minus eric patterson for cabrera
  6. Two dumb lines from that article: yeah... and back then, nobody thought Luis Montantez was the second coming of, oh I dunno, Chris Burke? Yeah, Ben Davis, great comparison. Never mind that Ben Davis was drafted straight out of high school, or that his plate discipline was miles behind Wieters. I'd say that Wieters' three seasons with an OPS over 1.000 would argue against an overly inflated opinion. It's not like he's a high school kid who's gotten by on word of mouth; he's played 150 games for a major D-I program. But Ben Davis was a catcher and was an early-round bust, so let's compare the two.
  7. they do this because the MLBPA won't come after them for trying to hold down the bonuses of amateur players. Meanwhile draft bonuses are probably about 5% of an average team's annual expenditures, but are a far more important part of a team's future. If MLB tried to do this with free agency, they'd be brought up on collusion charges so fast they wouldn't know what hit them.
  8. I AGREE VERY MUCH. this should replace the hottest chick tourney. great idea five!
  9. good point... have the Cubs spent many high draft picks on college hitters though? I think a lot more have been on high school bats. how many teams do? most early college picks are always pitchers. the good bat talents sign as high schoolers. that would certainly explain why two years ago, five of the top seven picks and 10 of the top 30 were college bats.
  10. good point... have the Cubs spent many high draft picks on college hitters though? I think a lot more have been on high school bats. More real high picks have been high schoolers, but college position players have been drafted high as well Top 10 round position players since 96 1996 2nd round-Quincy Carter-HS 5th round-Chad Myers-college 6th round-Doug Hall-college 9th round-Nate Manning-college 97 5th round-Jaisen Randolph-HS 6th-Matt Mauck-HS 8th-Ron Walker-college 9th-Gary Johnson-college 10th-Mike Amrhien-college 98 1st-Corey Patterson-HS 2nd-Dave Kelton-HS 2nd-Jeff Goldbach-HS 3rd-Robert Bass-HS 6th-Tony Shrager-college 10th-Nate Frese-college 99 2nd round-Mike Mallory-HS 3rd-Ryan Gripp-college 7th-Mike Dzurilla-college 9th-Chris Curry-college 10th-Jim Deschaine-college 00 1st-Luis Montanez-HS 2nd-Bobby Hill-HS 3rd-Nic Jackson-college 5th-Gary Banks-HS 7th-Ryan Jorgenson-college 10th-Blake Blesi-college 2001 3rd-Ryan Theriot-college 5th-Brendan Harris-college 8th-Warren Hanna-college 10th-Corey Slavick-college 2002 2nd-Brian Dopirak-HS 3rd-Matt Craig-college 4th-Alan Rick-HS 6th-Chris Walker-college 7th-Joey Mohahan-college 8th-Jason Fransz-college 9th-Adam Greenberg-college 10th-Keith Butler-college 03 1st-Ryan Harvey-HS 3rd-Jake Fox-college 4th-Tony Richie-college 7th-Kyle Boyer-college 9th-Drew Larson-college 10th-Casey McGehee-college The Cubs have been terrible at developing any type of hitter-both HS and college. There have been more HS hitters taken in the first 5 rounds, and more college hitters taken overall in the top 10 rounds. They simply haven't done a good job of either. Right, but 1st/2nd round picks are far more likely to develop than later round picks. Looking at those: 2nd round - Quincy Carter - made the big leagues (in the NFL) 1st round (3rd overall) - Corey Patterson - we all know how this turned out 2nd round - David Kelton (bum) 2nd round - Jeff Goldbach (bum) 2nd round - Mike Mallory (bum) 1st round (3rd overall) - Luis Montanez (bum) 2nd round - Brian Dopirak - well on his way to becoming a bum 1st round - Ryan Harvey - see Dopirak College: 2nd round - Bobby Hill - AAAA player so it's not fair to compare the success of the lower-drafted college players to the more highly-rated high school players. Plus, look at the guys who have actually made it to the big club the past couple of years. Murton (Red Sox college draftee) and Theriot made the big leagues, and Brendan Harris is having a solid year so far for the D-Rays. Eric Patterson is working his way up the ladder, and Jake Fox has become a good offensive prospect. Meanwhile, just about every high school player on your list was a complete non-factor at the big league level, save Corey Patterson.

  12. Because we would all fear to vote NO to you. So you'd win unfairly. I'd create new usernames just so I could vote against modzilla.
  13. i'm all set... thanks for the offer though
  14. The Cubs have had a very poor track record when it comes to drafting high school hitters... but more importantly, the Cubs have a need at catcher, and also have a need for high-OBP players. Wieters is a polished college bat who fills both those needs. That's the bigger reason why I'd hate drafting Vitters or Moustakas.
  15. goony will definitely lose to slugger16
  16. it makes me laugh how teams will balk spending a few million extra dollars in the draft, but then throw obscenely overpriced contracts at mediocre free agents. A lot of that is PR-signing free agents, even mediocre ones, can sell tickets. that must be why wrigley is selling out this year... jason marquis!
  17. no, cobb's season high was 20. It belongs to the immortal Chief Wilson. You have to go all the way down to 23 triples before the first guy from the post-World War II era.
  18. it makes me laugh how teams will balk spending a few million extra dollars in the draft, but then throw obscenely overpriced contracts at mediocre free agents.
  19. Hopefully Cedeno told him to hold on to it. It takes a mighty long time to have one shipped to Chicago if he needs it later. Now that was funny-good work there. Patterson should be able to play 2B the next few days with an infielder being called up from Iowa with the injury to Ramirez. that's what I'm hoping... but God forbid he should make an error, he'll be banished to utility work forever
  20. Even though I don't want Vitters, he does have a nice compact stroke... i mean, he'll still be a bust, but at least it's more excuseable than drafting Ryan Harvey Part II.
  21. in 30 games... great sample size
  22. bitter detroit fan? No bitter Minnesota fan. I've been rooting against the Ducks every series but they keep on winning. Plus I hate the Idea of the cup going to California. better than going to florida or carolina... well maybe not better, but the same. plus, if a team wins a stanley cup and nobody watches, did it really happen?
