    I was thinking about this yesterday when I was reading Cuse's Felix Pie thread. If Pie were to play so well that he could claim the CF job, and Soriano gets moved to RF, would moving Jacque to the Phillies for Lieber make sense for both clubs? I think Gillick might take that deal. He no longer would have 6 starters vying for 5 spots (assuming Eaton is healthy), and it would allow him to trade Rowand to San Diego for Linebrink, as an example. If the rumour mill is half-true, Gillick has been talking about trading Rowand for a reliever if he can trade Lieber for another OF. As for the Cubs and Lieber, they could probably trade him to an AL club for prospects like Toronto or Minnesota, who seem very interested in acquiring a starter. You figure Lieber would be much better than Ramon Ortiz or John Thomson, as examples. You could also argue that Lieber would be insurance if Prior and Miller can't make it back. He would only cost $2M more than Jacque. Just thinking out loud. Hoops

    I like that idea. With Foulke retiring, I wonder if Hendry could entice them with a relief pitcher.

    You and Triple B might be right - having Soriano be the everyday CF would solve many problems. But, I'm just looking at it from the point of view of what if it doesn't work out. What if the conclusion in late March is that Soriano can't handle CF and is better suited for RF?

    Maybe you folks have discussed this somewhere else - if so, I apologize in advance for the redundancy. Here's what I was thinking about last night. I made 4 assumptions: (1) Jacque Jones would be starting in CF. (2) Alfonso Soriano would be permanently starting in RF, and hence will not be bounced around from position to position. (3) Lou has the sense to recognize that Jones shouldn't be facing lefties. (4) Murton can't play CF. If all that holds true, it would suggest that the Cubs should have a right-handed hitting CF as a platoon partner for Jones. Would that be Theriot? Pagan? DeRosa? Or, should they use their depth in relief pitching to trade for a quality platoon CF, who happens to bat right-handed? Does someone like that exist? And, is he available? Hoops

    This author seems to think Ronny Cedeno is a bench option. I have confidence in Piniella that he will come to the conclusion very soon that Cedeno doesn't belong anywhere near the major league club.

    They both bat left handed. My guess is that Floyd and Murton wil share LF until Floyd goes on the down low. Given the roster, the right thing to do when facing a lefty is for DeRosa to move from 2B to RF, and to let Theriot start at 2B.

    I just saw an ABC Channel 7 sports guy interview Hendry. He seemed totally shocked at what Zambrano said. I'm paraphrasing here: Hendry said that Z and his people have told him along that they want to get a deal done, but if in fact Z did say the things he did in the tone he did, then it's not really constructive. My 2 cents: I'd like Z to stay, but given his demands for contract duration and money (Zito contract), and the workload he's been under, I think the Cubs would be wise to move him. I don't think he's a punk or jackass for making the demand. He knows what he wants - I don't hold that against him. But I wouldn't pay him Zito money. Prior AND Miller showing up healthy could probably accelerate Hendry's decision to trade Z if the negotiation goes nowhere.

    Purely speculation on my part, but I think the Cubs and Jacque Jones will separate before we see April. With all the discussion/speculation in print and on sports talk radio, I don't see how Jones can remain a Cub. I say this separation will happen for non-baseball reasons.

    Speaking of Ryan Church, does anyone have anything new to report on his availability? I recall Bruce Levine mentioning on the radio last week that the Cubs were showing interest in Erstad and Church. The big question still is where do the Cubs send Jacque Jones? I'm wondering if Philadelphia would be a good destination. Their OF is shaping up to be Burrell, Rowand and Victorino - other than Burrell, not a lot of SLG there. Would the Phils trade Victorino ("cheap, young CF") for Jones if the Cubs picked up some cash? How about Rowand? He's not cheap or young, but he wouldn't block Pie considering Aaron is a free agent after 2007, and his salary would offset Jones' salary in 2007.

    Triple B, Short of the Cubs acquiring a right-handed platoon partner for Jones, I still think that when the Cubs are facing a lefty, Lou Piniella will consider using DeRosa in RF and starting Theriot at 2B. Hoops

    Perhaps I haven't seen Gonzalez pitch enough, but I just don't get this trade from Atlanta's perspective. The Braves probably could have gotten Ohman, Cotts or Eyre for far less than LaRoche.

    Right, wrong or indifferent, they are. I believe you. I just don't want to believe the Cubs. Can't blame you. It's pretty much like the papers have been reporting. Both the Cubs and Jacque Jones want to separate. For Hendry, it simple comes down to money. He wants someone to take on all or most of that $9M salary and $2.67M signing bonus.

    Bingo. I still think it is possible that one of these lefties (Ohman or Cotts or Eyre) could be packaged with Jones to increase his trade value during the next 2 months. I suspect Hendry doesn't care as much about what he gets back for Jones as he cares about how much of the $11.67M due Jones over the next 2 years the trading partner is willing to pick up. A source, having no knowledge of any pending deal, said Hendry seems quite content to go with Murton in LF, Soriano in RF and a half-season placeholder in CF like a Steve Finley or Darin Erstad just as long as they free up cash by jettisoning the "disgruntled" Jones. The object of the Hendry's game here is to get rid of Jones and pick up little to no cash on his guaranteed money. Hoops

    How about Jones, Izturis and 2 starters from the group of Marshall, Guzman and Marmol to Baltimore for Miguel Tejada. Then, the Cubs can go with Pie in CF and bat him 8th. Lineup: Soriano Murton/DeRosa Lee Ramirez Tejada Barrett DeRosa/Ward Pie

    I think the Dodgers feel they can get Vernon Wells or Andruw Jones for Penny and a prospect, so I don't believe they'd do the deal you are proposing.

    Why? Are you advocating regular usage of a late inning defensive replacement? Are there any rumors of the Cubs being interested in Steve Finley for a 1 year deal?

    To me, it will be a miracle if Ronny Cedeno makes the club - he is awful, and the Cubs know it. DeRosa seems like the logical candidate with Theriot going to 2B as others have suggested. He needs to develop a plan on how to hit a pitcher and if he doesn't he'll be a 250/290 guy for the rest of his career. It will probably be in another uniform. I still think the Cubs will deal him as part of a package with relief pitching.

    Mussina, Wang, Johnson, Pettitte and Igawa (assuming they reach a deal with him). Just like Jaret Wright a few weeks ago, it sure sounds like the Carl Pavano experiment is over in the Big Apple. They will undoubtedly try to dump him on somebody - who is very desperate other than Baltimore? Toronto? Giants? Astros?

    I didn't ask. He didn't say. If I talk to him again in the next few days, I'll ask. Isn't Toronto trying to get him if their Wells for Penny and a prospect idea falls through?
