  1. You have that much faith in Cubs management that you believe the fact that something wasn't done is justification for it not having been done? There were several areas they could have improved in - I wasn't expecting all the fixes, but at least one should have been implemented. Is it possible a deal was made, and Hendry is waiting to report on it this evening with Len and Bob?
  2. It definitely wasn't that guy. But I hear that guy had the idea of trading for Pat Burrell.
  3. Didn't know I had a radar. I read it this morning in Barry Rozner's column.
  4. Kline absolutely hates the Cardinals (I'm not sure of the reasons). It might be an asset to have him considering we have 8 games left with STL.
  5. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/rozner.asp?id=335935 "If the Giants start dumping players for prospects, two guys who could help the Cubs immediately are lefty reliever Steve Kline and lefty pinch hitter Mark Sweeney. They’re both specialists and both have playoff experience." Sweeney has a .974 OPS as a pinch hitter, and could replace Ward. Kline has been amazing since June 1 - just 2 earned runs in 20 appearances/21 innings. Hoops
  6. I don't get the interest in Ryan Church: Sub 700 OPS against lefties Sub 800 OPS against righties
  7. I just heard the Cubs are looking at Brad Wilkerson. Why? Despite being a left-handed hitter, he's mashing lefthanded pitching: .266 AVE .356 OBP .609 SLG .965 OPS
  8. My cousin, who lives in Detroit, just heard on sports talk radio there that the trade is done. I still haven't seen an official link though.
  9. While the Baltimore Sun has picked up the Payton rumor for 2 "mid-level" prospects, my source insists Jones is still part of this discussion. By the way, the Cubs also had a recent conversation with the Twins about sending Jones and a prospect for Hunter. Supposedly it was a short call.
  10. What is three games going to show the Reds, especially since he's not even starting tonight? mlbtraderumors says Levine mentioned any deal would probably involve Gallagher and Murton. Beats me. I typically don't take what this Bruce says too seriously though I will report it here as a "service" to my non-Chicago friends here; now the other Bruce, friend of NSBB, if he were to say it, it would be as good as gold in my book.
  11. Bruce Levine just name dropped Griffey and Dunn on ESPN radio AM 1000 as potential Cub targets. Implying Murton is on showcase this weekend.
  12. Wonder if the Mets will react by trading for Loretta (or Castillo).
  13. The source, who told me about the Cubs scouting Stairs last week, said he heard from a contact in the O's organization that MacPhail and Hendry had had conversations recently about a Jones for Payton deal. Payton would be used as a right-handed platoon player for Pie in CF or Floyd in RF. Both players are due to make $5M in 2008, so there would be no cash involved - both are free agents after '08. The O's want a left-handed DH/outfielder, who can be reasonably priced insurance if Corey Patterson doesn't re-sign. Just a rumor. Not sure if the talks were early stage, ongoing or dead. Payton's stats against left-handers in 2004-2006 are .346 OBP/.435 SLG seem to be in line with 2007: .360 OBP/.420 SLG. Hoops
  14. Platooning with Jason Michaels, perhaps.
  15. Kendall is a free agent after the season. Maybe I missed your point.
  16. Speaking of Dye and Dunn, check out Burrell since July 1: .391 average .525 OBP .696 SLG 1.221 OPS 4 HRs 13 RBIs He makes $14M in 2008. Coincidentally, so do Dempster, Jones and Eyre combined. With Lieber and Garcia free agents, Phillies could transition Dempster back to a starter, replace Burrell with Jones and see if a change of scenery helps Eyre. That trade would look like the Hundley for Karros and Grudzielanek deal I have been thinking about. Burrell has never played RF, so Soriano would have to move to RF. That plus the fact that Pat is so inconsistent would be disadvantages. The potential advantage of adding Burrell over Dye or Dunn is that Hendry would in all likelihood not have to give up any farm talent. Dye makes the most sense if nothing too valuable is given up. Adding Dunn makes little sense to me - his option for 2008 is voided if he's traded, liability in the field and less than .700 OPS against left-handers.
  17. Any WSCR listerners hear the same? It wouldn't be the first time that AM 1000 jumped the gun and got it wrong? Any other sources or news?
  18. I heard it at 7:20 PM CDT this evening on the ESPN AM 1000 Sportscenter update. Hoops
  19. Do these numbers help us out? Overall for the entire season ------------------------------- OBP: 10th in NL @ .329 (PHL, LAD, COL are 1st, 2nd, 3rd) SLG: 8th in NL @ .411 (PHL, MIL, FLA) JULY (Great pitching gave us the 12-6 mark) ------------------------------- OBP: 11th in NL @ .325 (LAD, PHL, STL) SLG: 13th in NL @ .365 (PHL, FLA, LAD) Against right-handers ------------------------- OBP: 6th in NL @ .336 (PHL, COL, ATL) SLG: 9th in NL @ .412 (PHL, FLA, CIN) Against left-handers ------------------------- OBP: 14th in NL @ .305 (LA, PHL, COL) SLG: 9th in NL @ .407 (MIL, FLA, PHL) SLG in July and OBP against lefthanders has been a huge issue. It would validate the need for a right-handed power bat. I'm beginning to think Aaron Rowand is the way to go. And guess which team is in town on the day of the trading deadline?
  20. It would take a boatload for that group, and at least 2 blue chippers. The Cubs don't have any outside of possible, Felix.....and I don't see the Yanks giving up Hughes when they are giving up ARod. The Yankees farm system has rebounded pretty well over the past two or three years. Ian Kennedy, Joba Chamberlain, Austin Jackson, and Jose Tabata are all doing fairly well and are all held in rather high regard. So, they don't have to give up Hughes...necessarily speaking. They also have received some promising prospects from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield trade, did they not?
  21. I wonder if Steve Phillips has heard Lofton's name "kicked around" by the Cubs people, or by Bruce Levine, who has been talking about Lofton on ESPN AM 1000 for the last 2 weeks.
  22. Update: I followed-up with the source. Stairs didn't look good against Weaver at all on Saturday: 2 weak ground outs and 2 foul ball outs. In fairness to him, nobody really looked good at the plate in that SEA-TOR game - combined 1 run and 7 hits between both teams. The Cubs may look more at Stairs, but they have other scouts looking at "other hitters" this week. No names. I asked about Jeff Conine. He said "why?" One new nugget: the scout supposedly told Hendry that Josh Towers looked great on the mound. Supposedly, Ricciardi has let teams know that Towers is available. Arbitration eligible again after this season.
  23. They were committed enough to give him a 3 year $17.5M deal in January. 07:$3.5M 08:$5M 09:$8M 10:$10M club option with a $1M buyout I don't see Hendry bringing on Kearns unless they take back Jones AND Eyre.
  24. I think the motivation for KW is pretty straightforward: he has a club option on Juan Uribe in 2008 for $5M. Based on comments he's made in the press the last 2 weeks here, he doesn't want Uribe back (can't blame him as Uribe has a .606 OPS), so they'll buy him out for $300K. But the free agent class for SS looks really, really bad as you know not counting ARod. And he doesn't have an in house soluton. So, with the offensive woes they've had if they can get a bat like Renteria for 2 seasons (2008-$10M with Boston paying about $3M of it and an $11M option in 2009), he'll gladly sacrifice Garland. I can tell you from one of my sources that even KW knows Garland is vastly over-rated. From Atlanta's side, they feel they need a starter to stabilize their rotation, and feel good about Escobar backfilling Renteria.
