    BtoB, Might it be easier to get Edgar Renteria? He had a better year than Tejada, and only has 1 year left on his deal. Boston has already paid Atlanta for his buyout clause.

    As we're getting close to the start of the off-season, I thought we could use this thread to continuously track and monitor the Cubs 2008 payroll as players are signed and/or traded. I'd request the moderators to give this "sticky" status, if appropriate. As of today: $15M Carlos Zambrano $13M Alfonso Soriano $13M Derrek Lee $14M Aramis Ramirez $7M Ted Lilly $5.5M Ryan Dempster (Free agent after 2008 season) $6.375M Jason Marquis $5M Jacque Jones (Free agent after 2008 season) $4.75M Mark DeRosa $4M Bob Howry (Free agent after 2008 season) $3.8M Scott Eyre-PLAYER OPTION (Free agent after 2008 season) $2.8M Henry Blanco $1.6M Will Ohman (Free agent after 2008 season) To-date, the Cubs have 13 players under contract in 2008 for $95.825M. Take it one step further: assuming the Cubs pick up Daryle Ward's $1.2M option, and assuming that Michael Wuertz (eligible for arbitration) and Ryan Theriot, Geo Soto, Matt Murton, Rich Hill, Carlos Marmol and Kevin Hart (all league minimum) have some role on the 25 man roster, that's another $4.7M. So, the Cubs would now have 21 players at $100.525M. Hoops

    Power hitting OF? Higher slugging middle infielder? #2/#3 starting pitcher? Other? If the Cubs 2008 financial commitments put them in a spot where they can only make one major change (via free agent or trade), what move would you make? For argument's sake, let's exclude A-Rod from this conversation. Hoops

    Hendry might be better off selling high on Theriot. His OBP is below average and he has no pop. Maybe Hendry can market Ryan's "grit and playing hard" into a nice deal. Short of no trade, I like Theriot as a bench player, but there's no way he deserves to start at 2B over DeRosa. And even if the club was configured in such a way that DeRosa was starting in RF, I would look elsewhere for a starting 2B. Hoops

    Fontenot had a great June. His hits in June led to several key wins. That's about all the positive stuff we can truthfully say about him. His OPS in JUL, AUG, SEP was .480, .624, .571, respectfully. In a word, dreadful. He has no business being guaranteed a spot on the 25 man roster next season. If he earns one out of Spring, great, but then he should be monitored. In reality, I would like to see Jim Hendry add him in some deal this Winter. Eric Patterson has a greater ceiling.

    Curious to hear people's thoughts on what type of player the Cubs should expect to get if they were to package Felix Pie and Sean Marshall in a deal. Gordon Wittenmyer has an interesting column today in the Sun Times, where he suggests that the Cubs should keep Jacque Jones and trade Pie. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/596021,CST-SPT-cub10.article That got me thinking about Pie and Marshall, who seems to be out of the rotation plans going forward (maybe I'm reading too much into things).     Other than ARod, Andruw and Torii, are there any "difference-making" free agents? It seems like a weak class. I do like Aaron Rowand.

    Playing meaningful games in September, and playing post-season baseball in October - for me, that was a fun ride except it was shorter than anticipated. They'll be back in 2008!

    Especially if Atlanta needs to clear payroll to sign Glavine. There was supposed to be an article in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution, where the writer claims Glavine would agree to a "discount" to return to the Braves. However, giving that discount would still require Atlanta to move a salary. Haven't seen the link yet.

    Hasn't there been talk of St. Louis increasing their payroll from ~$95M in 2007 to ~$115M in 2008? That influx in cash could negate the spiral.

    We're one-third of the way there folks! Since I sent this out on Saturday morning, the Cubs have gone 2-0 and the Brewers have gone 0-2. Now, the Cubs have 3 games to play before Friday (3 at Florida), and the Brewers have 4 games to play before Friday (3 with St. Louis and 1 with San Diego). If the Cubs go 2-1 and Milwaukee does no better than 2-2, division clinched by Thursday night! Anybody think we could clinch by Wednesday night??!! GO CUBS!!!

    It sure would be nice for that last series in Cincinnati to be meaningless. In order to do so, however, one of these 4 combinations would need to occur over the next 6 calendar days (Saturday through Thursday) Cubs Brewers 5-0 no better than 3-3 4-1 no better than 2-4 3-2 no better than 1-5 2-3 0-6 I'm looking at scenario 2 (Cubs going 4-1). In the next 6, the Brewers face: Smoltz, Reyes, Wainwright, Looper, Pineiro and Cassell. Can you see Milwaukee losing 4 of those 6? Hoops

    On 3 days rest? Is it because they want him matched up against Harang? Why can't they pitch him on Wednesday on normal rest? He would still be able to pitch on Tuesday the 25th and Sunday the 30th (if required). Confused, Hoops

    I think that's well said. Not counting the 2 make up games the Cards have to play (one at Wrigley, one at Shea), each team has 10 series left in the season. Quick analysis: (1) 6 of the series are washes: each team plays a home and away series with Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Houston. (2) Each team has a series with Milwaukee, albeit the Cards have to go to Miller while the Cubs get the Brewers at Wrigley. Slight advantage to the Cubs. (3) They play a crucial 4 game series at Busch Stadium. Cubs have played better at Busch as of late and I think their pitching is stronger, but the Cards are at home. Slight advantage to the Cards. (4) Each team plays one series against an NL west team. Cards have to go to the desert to play D-Backs, while the Cubs entertain LA. Slight advantage to the Cubs. (5) Each team plays one series against an NL East team. Cubs have to go to Florida, who while struggling always play the Cubs tough; Cards entertain Phillies, who should be motivated by the Wild card race. I call it a wash. Final score: 2 washes, 2 advantages for Cubs, 1 advantage for STL. Cubs by a hair!

Towers, also drawing interest from other clubs, could be moved in the next several days . . . " Could the Cubs be one of those "other clubs?" They scouted his one start the same weekend they were looking at Matt Stairs. With Marshall's and Hill's recent struggles with pitch counts and not consistently being able to get to the 6th inning, I wonder if Hendry may take a look at Towers. Hoops

    ... according to Ken Rosenthal - today on Fox Sports. If the Phillies fade the next 2 weeks, I wonder if they'd try and trade him.

    8-10-07 8:40 AM CDT ESPN Radio AM 1000: Bruce Levine is reporting that the Cubs have claimed Podsednik and that Hendry and Kenny are trying to work out a deal before Sunday. Just his opinion, but Levine thinks it will get done.

    Are you saying you know that Ohman has cleared waivers or that Oakland has claimed him first?

    Let's carry this thought forward. Oakland has three choices here: (1) Pull him back from waivers. (2) Just let him go to the Cubs - Cubs would assume the remaining contract. (3) Make a trade. If I understand waivers correctly with item 3, the Cubs can only trade 3 types of players: (a) player(s) from the Cubs 40-man who has (have) cleared waivers; (b) a player from the Cubs 40-man, who was claimed on waivers first by Oakland; © player(s) who is (are) not on the 40 man roster. If it's scenario 3a or 3b, there would be no impact on the 40-man roster; however, if it's scenario 2 or 3c, the Cubs would have to remove somebody from their 40 man roster to add Stewart. That would be either a player who has cleared waivers or somebody the Cubs would have to DFA. Interested to see how all this unfolds.

Cruz played well earlier in the season, when he platooned with left fielder Terrmel Sledge and filled in when right fielder Brian Giles was hurt. But his playing time dwindled from late June on, after Giles returned and the Padres acquired Milton Bradley. The Padres are carrying 13 pitchers, so the other two moves likely will come from that group." His 3 year splits (2004-2006) LHB: 826 at bats .225 .330 .415 .745 RHB: 312 at bats .292 .393 .490 .883 There has not been much difference in 2007, but historically he has hit left-handed pitching well. Could be an option.
