  1. Funny, you mentioning the Rockies. Weren't they recently shopping for a 4th/5th oufielder, who is left-handed and can handle CF?
  2. Through a source, there has been some chatter this week, nothing more, nothing less. The number of homers that Hill and Marshall gave up in their last starts alarmed some folks I'm told. My sense is that both will be under some scrutiny in their next starts. The big question I have is that if Marshall or Hill were dealt for a major bat, who would step into the rotation? The homers Lilly gives up isn't alarming them as well? Good question. I asked that question too. The source indicated the focus was on Hill and Marshall because of their "cheap" production and age.

  4. If I told you that the Cubs had made a decision today to have only 2 lefties in the rotation with Lilly being one of them, and would therefore deal one of the other 2 guys to acquire a major bat, who would you deal, Hill or Marshall, if the goal was to win in the timeframe with Lee and Ramirez around? Please analyze. Who's got the higher ceiling, who's got the better chance to maximize his potential, who can sustain more success in the NL/NL Central, etc... Hoops
  5. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/437375,CST-SPT-cubnt21.article "The Cubs have talked with the Texas Rangers and several other teams about deals involving outfielder Jacque Jones, team officials confirmed." Jim, don't let him get on the team plane after the game today - just leave him in Arlington! In other news regarding Griffey: "While the Cubs' uncertain ownership future makes acquiring a player with a multiyear contract more difficult, team officials say they haven't been told they can't take on salary beyond this year. Things may be looking up!
  6. The only argument I can see for this is money. If the ownership issue has frozen the budget at its current value (more or less), then freeing up Barret's money might be one of the only ways to add salary in a trade for an upgrade. There was no money freed up by getting rod of Barret. The Cubs paid for most of his remaining salary. It sounds like they saved about $800,000. Yes, the press release said $700K. Barrett was due $2.2M for the remainder of the season with the Cubs picking up $1.5M and the Padres picking up $700K.
  7. Sounds like the Cubs made a final decision that Barrett wouldn't be back after the 2007 season, and wanted to cut ties now. Maybe it's a precursor to Zambrano signing an extension. Maybe some horsetrading went on like "I'll sign a hometown discount deal, if you get rid of that guy."
  8. It's not easy for every GM to eat $5.6M. That's how much the Cubs still owe Eyre for the remainder of 2007 and all of 2008. Its also how much money we are paying Jones per year. Yes, the Cubs owe Jones $7M over the next year and a half.

  10. BBB raises an excellent point, which reminded me of something a source of mine said earlier this year. Many like to make fun of Jim Bowden around here, but my source told me that the dumbest GM in baseball unequivocally is Jon Daniels of the Rangers. "Definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer by any stretch." My source, who happens to scan Tim's site here on a regular basis, told me just by reading some threads here that there are at least 100 posters, who would be better than Daniels on philosophy alone.
  11. Bingo! You're the best caller of the show. End of story, no deal. Not so fast. It really depends on what salaries the Reds are willing to take back, and what the teams decide on the deferred money issue. For example, if Hendry could trade a subset of players, whose 2008 contracts offset Griffey's 2008 salary, I don't think the Trib would stand in his way.
  12. ... without trading Philip Hughes. Hmmm.... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6938410 Here's what he suggests: "The Rangers, on the other hand, could make a quality deal if they landed, say, Cabrera (Melky), plus Wright (Chase) or Chamberlain (Joba), plus another decent pitching prospect." While I don't claim to be an expert on the Yankee system, it seems to me that the Orioles, Angels and Dodgers could all provide Texas with better prospects near major-league ready. Hoops
  13. 16 games in June: .533 OBP and .678 SLG (1.211 OPS). From May 30 through June 17, he has added 55 points to his on-base, and 90 points to his slugging. Will it last? I wonder if the Yankees might try to sell high by trading him to an NL contender (Dodgers, Padres, D-Backs, etc...) for young prospects, then take those prospects and turn them into an OF or 1B under contract through 2008 (like Teixeira, Helton, Griffey). 14. Interesting... http://www.nypost.com/seven/06172007/sports/let_the_trades_begin__sports_joel_sherman.htm?page=3 "In the end, the Yanks might have to settle for a first base/utility type who is currently overpaid such as San Francisco’s Rich Aurilia or the Cubs’ Mark DeRosa. As for New York’s other squad . . . While I like DeRosa's .357 OBP, great attitude and plate patience, it would be good to get out from under his last 2+ years on the present contract. Hoops
  15. ... in a Bill Madden article about the Cubs and Sox. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/col/madden/index.html "For all the expensive wheeling and dealing done by GM Jim Hendry over the winter, he can expect heavy prodding from his manager to get a power relief arm - a la Texas' Eric Gagne - in the weeks leading up to the trading deadline. Intriguing thought especially if the Cubs stay close through July. $6M base salary for 2007 + performance bonuses for games finished. Free agent after 2007. An expiring contract - exactly the type Jim Hendry can take on at the deadline, especially if a finds a taker for Eyre, Jones, Barrett, etc... Hoops
  16. Some more Barrett/Cubs opinions here from Bill Madden of the NYDaily News: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/2007/06/17/2007-06-17_chicago_dogs-2.html "One suspects, too, that once catcher Henry Blanco comes back from the disabled list in two weeks, Hendry will do his darnedest to unload defensively challenged Mike Barrett, whose best hitting this year has been restricted to the blows he landed on Zambrano in their dugout/clubhouse fracas a couple weeks ago."
  17. ... due to his "erratic, inattentive play," according to Ken Rosenthal. http://video.msn.com/v/us/foxsports.htm?f=33&g=ea9f156f-2758-427a-9e85-3f9234e4d766&p=&t=m1482&rf=http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb&fg=/mlb/home Video link - hope it works. Otherwise, check it out through foxsports.com Ken mentions that Piniella prefers a strong defensive presence; the video mentions Colorado and Florida as two teams, who might be in the market for an offensive upgrade at the catcher's spot. Ken also talks about Tejada in LA as a 3rd baseman. Hoops p.s. Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there (myself included)!
  18. I was kind of thinking along the same lines as Jersey. I see this situation with 13 pitchers leading to problems in the upcoming series vs. SD.
  19. To date, the Cubs best 10 game stretch of the year took place between April 25 and May 8 when they went 8-2. Of course, they played St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Washington in 9 of those 10 games. I also seem to recall that it was around the time Ryan Theriot was inserted in the 2-hole, and I remember him being a good catalyst because he was always ahead in the count.
  20. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_512483.html "Who needs a shortstop? The Los Angeles Angels reportedly have been trying to pry Miguel Tejada away from Baltimore, but they covet Tejada's bat much more than his defense. Boston, Minnesota and the Chicago Cubs also might be looking." What would the Angels do with Cabrera if they got Tejada? What would the Red Sox do with Lugo if they got Tejada? What would the Cubs do with Izturis... hmmm... never mind... I just hope it's not Jack Wilson the Cubs are interested in... Hoops
  21. Check out these Murton splits for the year-to-date: In about 60 plate appearances at Wrigley: .145/.203/.200/.403 In about 75 plate appearances away from Wrigley: .344/.432/.453/.885 (AVE/OBP/SLG/OPS) Has anyone seen a gap like that before this far into a season? It's unbelievable.
