  1. Except he was wrong about the duration. Pettitte got a player option, which effectively makes it a 2 year deal.
  2. So it's true that we've signed him? Not to his knowledge. He called it a deal on the table, not an agreed to deal. Does he have any other insight as to what other players we are looking to sign or trade for? Thanks Hoops. Nothing new. Cubs are looking to move Jones, but there isn't much of a market for him; they are trying to create a market for him by bundling relief pitching and a pitching prospect. No real bites other than the O's. As for starting pitching, they have inquired about Mark Hendrickson and continue to monitor Jason Jennings. No interest in Batista or Lieber at this point. Still wrestling with what to do in CF. Very interested in Lofton at $3M, but not at $6M. Have inquired about Church, but Nats want the moon. Good to know, thanks. That sucks about Church. The other thing he (based in NYC) told me is that he's 99% sure that Andy Pettitte is going to re-join the Yankees, and it's better than 50-50 that Vernon Wells will be dealt prior to December 31. Pettitte's deal will only be for 1 year. Looks like he was right about Pettitte :) That wasn't so hard to predict - especially after the Garland rumor surfaced yesterday. By the way, if the whole Matsuzaka negotiation blows up and he heads back to Japan, I wonder if Boston will sign Clemens.

  4. Keep holding on to the Tums. This same source thought the Cubs would get Soriano at 6 years and $96M. Then look what happened...

  7. I just checked with a source of mine. He's hearing that the rumored deal on the table to Marquis is for 1 year and $4M in 2007 with an $8M vesting team option or $1M buyout in 2008. He has no clue on the vesting clause criteria, but he's guessing some quantity of innings pitched.
  8. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/printedition/2006/12/08/sptbraves1208a.html "The Braves next big decision could involve second baseman Marcus Giles, who has drawn tepid trade interest. He's arbitration-eligible and will make more than $5 million unless the Braves trade him or decide not to tender him a contract before Tuesday's deadline. . . . While they'd prefer not to let Giles go without getting something in return, the Braves will be at or near their $80 million payroll limit if they tender contracts to arbitration-eligibles LaRoche, Giles and pitchers Oscar Villarreal and Chris Reitsma. LaRoche and Villarreal seem the only certain returners." Seems like other than the Scott Linebrink rumor, there has been very little to no interest in Giles. Belliard and Loretta on the market probably has something to do with that. It sure sounds like if they keep Reitsma, Giles could be a free agent. Given DeRosa's contract, is there any possibility Hendry could get involved? Hoops
  9. That's a good point. He'd probably end up with the Giants as rotoworld was speculating that he might be too expensive for the Padres. Still, if he was an option is he worth pursuing? I would say no. It was one thing when he was a loud mouth fatty fat fat who got the job done. Recently he's been either mediocre or absent. I'd steer clear. Did Batista get signed already? He seems like a better target than Marquis.
  10. Where are you going to get a number 2? I'm not in favor of signing Marquis, but a front-line starter is pretty much out of the question. Why not Zito? The money the Cubs would throw at Zito should be reserved for Zambrano, who is going to cost a small mint to keep around. right now, just thinking what Big Z would ask for on the open market is scaring me. 6 years and $102M is my guess.
  11. I don't like the team, I don't like the guy, but I admire his boldness and creativity. He dumped $10M in salary by trading Garcia. He could dump another $10M if the Garland deal does go through. If so, he could suddenly have $20M and some good young arms. And his weak links are SS, CF and LF. He's up to something. You have to wonder if something big is about to happen with any of the usual suspects: Manny, ARod, Tejada, Burrell, Vernon Wells, Andruw Jones, etc... As a baseball fan, it's intriguing to watch. There could be 2 deals or a 3-way deal in the works.
  12. Mark Hendrickson? http://www.newsday.com/sports/printedition/ny-spbbnotes075006003dec07,0,2297327.story?coll=ny-sports-print I hope I am wrong, but in the end if the Cubs do trade Jacque, I think Rodrigo Lopez will be heading this way.
  13. Even though the season was awful, I started to feel good about the prospects for a fun offseason the second I heard Neifi was traded.
  14. Here's a question: What is the convenional wisdom suggest - does Toronto do better if they trade him now or if they wait until the July deadline? By "do better" I mean get the most return. Hoops
  15. Sorry mods. Didn't see Ryno's thread.
  16. According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio AM 1000 in Chicago, Kenny Williams and Brian Cashman are "discussing" an ARod for Crede and Garcia deal. Bruce went out of his way to tell the radio audience that the meeting took place at 1 AM. It'll interesting to see if anything happens with ARod. Hoops
  17. This is somewhat consistent: earlier in the day it was reported on the WSCR that Colorado wanted more than just Jones and a Cubs prospect for Jennings, and that it was believed Hendry was trying to find a third team. Assume that Pittsburgh trades one of it's left-handers (relief or rotation) to Colorado. What would the Pirates get in return from the Rockies and/or Cubs, Hawpe and more Cubs pitching?
  18. Could this be Kenny Williams waiting in the weeds, under the radar, and ready to pounce? That kind of trade would send a message to Detroit. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-061204sox,1,1986920.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines Registration required Brian Anderson or Ryan Sweeney or Jerry Owens and a starting pitcher (Kenny will dangle Garcia or Buehrle, but if I was Riccardi I would want Garland or Contreras since they're under contract for more than 1 season)? Hoops

Go sign him Mr. Towers. It would be nice if Hendry got over his infatuation with Lilly, and re-focused his efforts on Schmidt.
  20. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20061204-2016-bn04cruz.html Jose Cruz to San Diego: 1 year and $650K.
  21. According to Phil Rogers, Dave Van Dyck and Paul Sullivan in their Winter Meetings Whispers, the Giants and Orioles are emerging as the main potential suitors for Jacque Jones. And to quote them: "The Cubs' willingness to deal Jones is probably more about his rift with fans than his subpar play in right field." http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-061204baseballwhispers,1,5058149.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines Registration required.
  22. Oh well. I was really hoping to see Mad Dog part III in Cubbie blue for 1-2 more years. You don't mean that. I sincerely do mean that. I would rather pay Maddux 2 years and $18M than pay Ted Lilly 4 years and $40M.
  23. Oh well. I was really hoping to see Mad Dog part III in Cubbie blue for 1-2 more years.
  24. Starting to look like somewhere in the bowels of a backroom in Orlando, Hendry got the final word that Schmidt either wasn't interested in Chicago, or only would be if the money was incredibly high, or wanted 5 years, or whatever. I agree, *sigh* I'm starting to believe this as well. If Seattle is willing to go 4/56 or something like that, it may mean Hendry would have to do better than 4/60 to get him to come to Chicago. My feeling is Hendry doesn't believe he can land Schmidt, so he decided not to try. Or Hendry is doing his best to keep his interest in Schmidt hidden and will come out and get him under the radar. I hope it is the latter, but greatly fear it is the former. Let's assume Schmidt is not do-able for whatever reason. My question is, why haven't we heard more stories or rumors linking the Cubs and Vicente Padilla in the last 72 hours? He's certainly better than Lilly, correct? And what's the difference between paying 4 years and $38M for Lilly and 4 years and $44M for Padilla? Hendry must be infatuated with this lefty thing - only explanation I can think of unless Padilla is asking for more than $11M per year or is asking for 5 or 6 year contract duration. Barring those, I see no good reason to sign Lilly without taking a shot at signing Padilla. JMO. Hoops
  25. Yep. His groundout to flyout ratio is not so favorable either. But he is lefty... whatever that's worth...
