    That doesn't sound like someone that's going to trade Izturis to me. At the same time, he could be attempting to boost Izturis' trade value.

    I think it was Ken Rosenthal, who said last night after the DeRosa signing that the Cubs looked like they were trying to package a young pitcher, either Cedeno or Theriot and Jacque Jones to get a corner OF with power. Something does seem up.

The Cubs also could trade shortstop Cesar Izturis, perhaps to the Red Sox, to create a spot for Lugo. Izturis, however, is valued for his defense -he won a Gold Glove in 2004 and was an All-Star in '05." Either way, I like the idea of trading Cesar to Boston!

    If you were to compare Mussina's numbers in 2006 with other free agent starting pitchers this offseason (not including Clemens), here's what you would find. The Moose had: - the lowest ERA (3.51) - the most quality starts (23) - the lowest WHIP (1.11) - the third highest K/9 ratio (7.84) - the highest K/BB ratio (4.91) - the lowest OBP for opposing batters (.279) - the lowest SLG for opposing batters (.374) In my estimation, he absolutely deserved his extension. I wish our club could get that type of performance.

    I wonder if Hendry may want a lefty and if he might be looking at this from a financial point of view as well. Righty Westbrook is under contract for $6.1M in 2007 and then becomes a free agent. Lefty Lee is under contract for 3 years at $2.75M in '07, $3.75M in '08 and $5.75M in '09 plus there is a team option in '10 for $8M. Might get decent production for 3 years at a reasonable price.

    No interest on my part. His offensive numbers are trending downward, seems always out of shape, plays less than average defense and tends to brood. Of the guys Crasnick listed, I still like Andruw Jones and Vernon Wells.

    I looked at Juan Pierre's numbers from 2006 since he started every game. 64% of his at bats were against righties, 36% against lefties.

    Actually I wasn't comparing this to Drew at all. I was merely suggesting that if used as a true platoon, nothing more nothing less, the Cubs could get decent production from RF for a combined $9.67M.

    I'm saying that's what I would do with the power of hindsight. If I used foresight, I wouldn't have signed Jones in the first place. I have no clue as to how Lou and Jim view De Rosa yet. We'll know more when Mr. Miles covers the story and we can read his report and Hendry's quotes in tomorrow's Daily Herald (shameless plug on behalf of our friend Mr. Miles). Hoops

    Jones had approx. 431 PAs against right handers in 2006. In those PAs he hit .303/.358/.528/.886 including 21 home runs and 59 RBIs. De Rosa had approx. 159 PAs against left handers in 2006, In those PAs he hit .342/.394/.589/.983 including 7 home runs and 27 RBIs. If they were played in a straight platoon, and we made an assumption that 67% of the at bats were against righties (Jones) and 33% of the at bats were against lefties (De Rosa), their combined stats would weight to: .316/.370/.548/.918 including 30 home runs and 96 Rbis. They make a combined $9.67M in 2007. That seems like good value.

    I would find it hard to believe that any GM would trade anything for Ronny Cedeno. Cedeno could be the worst player in major league baseball to have had 500 PAs in 2006. I don't ever want to see him playing in a Cubs game again (unless he happens to be wearing the opponent's uniform).

    I hope this means the insurance company is paying Glendon Rusch's $3.25M salary in 2007.

    Can he play RF against a tough lefty to spell Jaqcue and to give Theriot some PT at 2B? Can he play SS if Izturis gets hurt? He does seem like the classic move around the diamond guy. I like the signing - but it sounds like Hendry paid too much too soon. If I recall we said that about Howry and Eyre last year. I think Howry was worth it; Eyre disappointed especially in second half.

Drew is the player the Red Sox have offered a free-agent contract to. Sox officials did not deny that Drew is the one." Rotoworld suggests that if they signed Drew, the Red Sox would probably turn around and trade Coco Crisp or Wily Mo Pena for bullpen help. I wonder if they would go for a Coco Crisp for Ryan Dempster deal? Crisp's OBP numbers were terrible in '06, but decent in '04 and '05. Would he be of interest to us?

    The numbers do not support this. Jones OPS last year was .062 points higher than Giles, for nearly half the cost. The OPS+ for Giles was only slightly less than Jones, but it was still less. Granted Jones had a career year, but Giles downward trend is consistent and notable. He is no more likely to reverse the trend than Jones is to repeat his 2006 year. So Giles is far from a 'significant upgrade' over Jones, when his production is likely to equal Jones going forward at twice the price no less. But Jones and Giles are night and day when it comes to OBP. And so if Giles is hitting ahead of a healthy Lee and a motivated Ramirez, it could be run city...

    Jeff, Funny you mention that. I've got a source on the East coast, who has told me twice (a month ago and during the Bears game yesterday) that he expects Hendry will "shop" Barrett to see what he can get for him. He did say he had heard that the Jays, Yanks and Rockies had all expressed interest in Barrett at the trading deadline. Barrett comes into his walk year in '07, and it seems Hendry is a bit nervous about offering him a contract extension due to some negative feedback from Cub pitchers on his defensive limitations. Rather than let him walk for nothing, he would like to get something. The source said he had heard from a Yankee contact that Hendry is intrigued with LoDuca, Pudge, Kendall and Posada, who will all be free agents at the end of 2007, and who he thinks would be good defensive catchers for the Cubs rotation starting in 2008 for a couple of seasons, who can also swing the bat. If they traded Barrett, the source said that the Cubs might look to sign a guy like Mike Lieberthal on a one-year deal to bridge the gap. Add that to the rumor mill!
