Considering our needs....why aren't we looking a little harder at Johnny Damon? I know Boras was asking for stupid amounts of money, but I he'll likely end up making less than what we were going to offer Furcal. I know it clogs up Pie's route to the Bigs but I'm willing to have to deal with that problem if it means getting a reliable leadoff hitter and center fielder. Thoughts?

I don't believe Boras is going to back down from his ridiculous demands - there's a team that's going to bite. It won't be Cubs but, some team will bite.

You really think he's going to get 7 years 84 million? I'd guess the final deal will be 5 years...something in there...at age 32 that's not ridiculous, but I can't imagine him getting 7 years.

I didn't think Beltran was worth the deal he got last year nor did I believe Furcal was worth 13 million a year let alone the 9+ million the Cubs were offering. So, yes, I believe some team will gullible enough to give Boras what he's asking for...

Phillips just said on ESPN Radio that Damon will probably get around 4 years, at 13 per. Cubs may be interested, but he will more than likey stay in Boston.

Also said he was the best lead-off hitter of this years FA. Anyone agree with that? I didn't think he was, but I may be wrong.

Bruce Levine, who's chilling at the winter meetings, just said on ESPN 1000 that Damon isn't on the cubs radar. his range is poor and he's too old for that kind of contract. hendry wants young guys.

I just read that as well. Very good to hear. Phillips said they "may" be interested. Looks like that is not the case. :D

Wait, if Bruce Levine said it...

he's usually good about this kind of stuff. it's the imminent trade stuff that he botches, or errors on the side of breaking the big story instead of waiting for definite confirmation.

Who's worse, Levine or Phillips?

OK, Levine is heads, Phillips is tails...

Phillips 2 out of 3 flips.

In all fairness though Levine is at the meetings and has more contacts than us. All of these guys probably talk to Hendry once out there as well as hear the local buzz so at least we get to hear something.
