Cubs make formal offer to Furcal

Kinzer declined to characterize his negotiations with any team. However, the buzz around baseball is that the Cubs are leading this race.

 

The Cubs have made no secret of their desire to install Furcal in their leadoff hole. And they've made him their top offseason priority. Furcal has gotten phone calls from Greg Maddux, Neifi Perez and Dusty Baker. It's believed the Cubs have squirreled away a major portion of their holiday shopping money to get Furcal signed.

 

Another one of Furcal's agents, Adam Katz, was scheduled to meet Tuesday evening with the Dodgers. After that meeting, Kinzer said, Furcal could make a decision quickly on which team he'll sign with.

 

"I would expect he'll make his decision in the next few days," Kinzer said, "just out of respect for the teams involved. We know that if they're not going to be the team that signs Raffy, they need to move along in pursuit of other options. And we respect that. So we would hope to have a decision before the winter meetings [next week in Dallas]."

Interesting. I thought Hendry visited Furcal in GA on Sunday. In eithercase, I hope SS is resolved soon.

Well, at least the whole Furcal situation will hopefully be over soon. I really hope that we get him. I really don't know why people would be happy if we don't get him, especially with reports that Neifi Perez could be a starter if the Cubs don't land him.

Braves free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal is leaning toward signing with the Chicago Cubs.

 

A source familiar with negotiations said Furcal received a five-year offer from the Cubs that was significantly greater than he was offered by the Braves, in dollars and contract length.

 

The race for Furcal is down to two or three teams — Braves, Cubs and possibly the Los Angeles Dodgers — with a decision expected within a few days.

I think if we dont sign Furcal we are in trouble. Did you guys read Brice Miles' areticle today? If they can't catch Furcal they feel good about a Cedeno and Perez tandem at SS. In other words Perez the starter for the Cubs at SS.

Bobby Cox won't have much to do with jiggling resources to offer Furcal more money. However, I think it goes without saying that Cox has helped with the psychological strategy.
