The market for lesser free-agent outfielders like Wilson, Jeromy Burnitz and Juan Encarnacion isn't expected to take shape until after the Giles and Johnny Damon sign their new deals. The Cubs and Rangers are among the clubs that have expressed interest in Wilson. The Cubs have not pursued Giles, preferring to focus on Furcal. They also have yet to learn what the Marlins might want in a trade for center fielder Juan Pierre.

 

Won't target Giles, but could target players like Wilson? :cry: :evil: :x I get the real feeling that Hendry clearly doesn't know how to build a team.

Now there's a report that claims Giles is in talks with the Blue Jays. The Yanks would sure be in desparation mode at that point if Giles ends up in Toronto.

The same report mentions the Jays are still very interested in Burnett as well. Not a bad offseason if they could pick-up Giles, Burnett and Ryan. They'll likely over pay the 3 in yrs. and $'s (by a lot, if Ryan's deal is any indication), but it appears to be the only way they can compete with the Red Sox and Yanks in the AL East. Pretty sad.

This is just getting crazy. Everyone is rumored to be going everywhere. Giles was also mentioned today "in talks with the Dodgers about their opening in LF". They were talking about wanting him to bat 3rd in front of Kent.

For the Blue Jays' sake I hope they don't sign Giles. The contract will be too long and expensive, and he'll maybe last two more years at current output.

I see Wilson as no value at all if he is playing a corner OF. I wouldn't mind him being a 7th or 8th hitter in CF as long as the Cubs have decent 1/2 hitters.

Wilson would have, by the currency of most of the discussion on this board, the exact same value at a corner infield spot as, well, Jeromy Burnitz. It is remarkable how similar their statistical performance has been. And while Preston may have, at one point, been more of a basestealing threat than Jeromy, they are no longer even that much different in that category.

 

Other than that, it would be guaranteed that if Dusty is the manager of this team -- and I like Dusty far more than the average Cubs fan -- there is no way that Preston Wilson would ever hit seventh or eighth in his lineup.
