If we sign Furcal and traded for Mench and Bradley, I think we would have the makings of a good line-up.

Furcal SS

Walker 2b

Lee 1b

Ramirez 3b

Bradley cf

Mench rf

Murton lf

Barrett c

It's not a murderers row, but I think it's a line-up that could score some runs.

You think the Cubs can make those two deals and not have Walker be part of them?

Especially now that we have more middle IF than pitchers.

I suppose Walker is going somewhere. My question: is Mench a guy that can catch the ball? Hendry likes players that can.

According to the Dallas Morning News (registration required), the Cubs have contacted the Rangers about Mench.

Daniels has spoken with at least four clubs who have expressed interest in Mench. On Tuesday, the Toronto Blue Jays joined a mix that already included Kansas City, the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh.

I think Mench could cost a good deal more than Mitre, though.

Kansas City has sought Mench for more than a year but was rebuffed by former GM John Hart at every turn. The Royals would be willing to part with 26-year-old Jeremy Affeldt, who has been erratic during his career but possesses two traits that portend success in Arlington. He is a left-hander who gets ground balls.

I'd have to think Affeldt has more value than Mitre, so just a deal involving Mitre isn't likely to get it done.

My guess is that Hill and Mitre would get it done.

According to the trib, Mench is definitely on Hendry's radar.

The Cubs reportedly have made inquiries to Texas concerning outfielder Kevin Mench, a 27-year-old right-handed hitter who combined for 51 home runs, 66 doubles and 144 RBIs over the last two seasons. The Rangers aren't seeking to trade Mench but are willing to listen to offers.

The Cubs probably would have to part with center fielder Corey Patterson and a pitching prospect to acquire Mench, who has the potential to become a 30-homer, 100-RBI hitter.

Patterson and Nolasco for Mench. Let's get it done!

I'd try and use two bulk guys in place of Nolasco, but if that were the price, I'd pull the trigger.

i'd be happy with murton in LF, giles in CF, and mench in RF. forget stellar defense in the OF.

You need a centerfielder who can cover a lot of ground. The Cubs really need to be strong defensively up the middle.

IMO Mench would be a solid RF. He is only turning 28 so he is just hitting his prime. I think you can expect him to have a pretty solid year this year, no matter where he plays.

I think the advantage of trading for Mench is that it gives us a good fallback plan in case we can't sign Giles, and can't swing a trade. It also gives us a touch of leverage, and if we do sign/trade for a different RF, he's a good 4th OF candidate.

It makes sense on a lot of levels to be proactive about RF and deal for him.

Mench is likely to make around 2 million in arbitration. While that's a little expensive for a fourth outfielder, the Cubs can afford it. He gives the Cubs a nice option for rightfield if no other option is found. He could also be dealt later if needed to, or he could be retained as a fourth outfielder.

If the price isn't too steep...say Patterson and Mitre...I'd do the deal in a heartbeat.
