Many of us were upset by the perceived inactivity this past off season, and still blame Hendry for not picking up better players. But in retrospect, were guys like Drew and Benitez worth the money? This year's FA class has even fewer options, and it may be prudent to not over reach for mid level talent.

More could have been done the previous offseason. There was enough on the market to make the Cubs a very good tream. Why couldn't they get Tejada or Vlad? Hendry was very shortsighted, and now I could definitely see them overspending on crap this offseason.

Whose the last player the Trib signed to a contract lasting longer than 4 years?? Hendry doesn't sign the paychecks.

They could have had the money to get Vlad. It just would have taken some outside-the-box thinking by Hendry. The Yankees needed a RF after 03. Sosa was still productive, but on the decline. At the time, I'm sure the Yankees would have loved to have him. So you give him to the Yankees, if he agrees to waive his NTC, and use the freed up money to sign Vlad.

Uh huh, give him up for nothing and watch Vlad go to Anaheim for 5 years and $75 million. When the Trib actually signs someone to a deal over 4 years, I'll start giving credibility to such scenarios.

no, he negotiates them. he makes the decisions on who comes here, for how much and how long.but he doesn't sign the checks...

as for giles getting 10 mil? no one thought that maggs would get what he got or drew would get what he got. it is even thinner this year and it only takes one stupid gm. (see mets:beltran)

i, for one, do not care to hear about free agent busts. there are risks but i would rather see my team go for it. if you signed drew(like nomar), then yes it's the gm's fault. if you igned benetiz, who had never been hurt..then it's bad luck not decisions. please do not try to say that hendry knew that these injuries would happen. if he was so good at that he really should have seen nomar's coming. it's a crap shoot but you can't win it, if you sit on the sidelines....and hendry has sat and watched for two years.
