C) However slim it may be, there's still some hope for Corey to do something positive, whereas Neifi is hopeless.

Again, far enough and well explained. I think you are hoping with your heart on ©.

I won't deny that. I used to be a proud Corey supporter. If somebody wants to take a position against him, there's not much to say in his defense. If Hendry chooses to non-tender Corey and cut all ties, I wouldn't really have much of a leg to stand on when ripping that move.

To you. If baseball could be completely explained by stats, why isn't it. Why do the Cubs play the Cards well and stink it up against the Reds? Why can't the Yankees beat the Devil rays. All of the stats in the world do not and will not ever completely explaing the game so stop pretending like they can.

What's your preferred method for explaining the game?

There's no way to fully explain the game, that's just the point. if the game could be objectively explained fully why hasn't it been in the 150 years people have been playing it. Does the team with the best stats win very year? Only if you are correct and cite the only stat that matters: wins and losses. Stats can be helpful to try to predict how things will go. But can you explain with stats the dread I feel facing the reds lineup while i really don't fear the cards and haven't for a couple of years. Intangibles exist. If you think you can explain this game fully you've got some ego on you.

You didn't answer my question. How do you know that Patterson has "sucked" more than Perez this year without looking at their stats?

Without looking it up, what do you think the discrepancy in hits between Hairston and Walker is? Hairston only has a couple more ABs.

I have little or no idea. What is the point of the question? I didn't know it was a quiz here today?

Gotta go in a minute just in someone thinks I am ignoring their queries. With regard to the earlier question, I can off the top of my head give you my impression (for what it's worth) of Hairston and Walker and one in relation to the other. If anyon really cares to hear it.

"the difference between a .275 hitter and a .300 hitter is one hit every 2 weeks."

It's impossible to appropriately value everything you see in your mind; there's a reason that there are statistics. BTW, Walker only has 12 more hits, less than one might think for a 40 point disparity in AVG.

As much as I'd love to get one of the above guys (especially Dunn or Gomes), it will really cost the Cubs. We all know TB GM Chuck LaMar's MO by now

Isn't there a better than average chance that he'll get fired? I thought I read that in the Lou Piniella threads that both he and LaMar were gone at the end of the season. Might be wishful thinking.

Given that the D-Rays plan on keeping Upton and Young down in AAA to start next season as not to start their option clocks, I wouldn't be surprised if their management decides to keep LaMar. They're a penny-pinching organization and everyone knows it. I wouldn't be surprised if LaMar's demands for Huff & Baez were applauded by the front office...

And heck, replacing him could be dangerous for other teams in baseball looking to acquire various players from the D-Rays. They could end up with some one even worse than LaMar, who could ask for Prior AND Zambrano in exchange for Huff and Baez. Or, worse, they might actually find some one competent and shrewd enough to rip other teams off without them knowing it until a few years down the line.

Actually, there's a good chance LaMar might be gone based on something I read in BA, as long as there are changes in upper management this coming offseason. Keeping Upton and Young down would be a decision that the whole organization seems to like.

There's a lot to be said for watching the game. The eyes can tell a much different story than the box score. But that doesn't mean stats should be ignored. The reason so many people think Perez has had agood season is that they are remembering his hot streaks but are forgetting his slumps. Conversely, many of the people that dislike Perez tend to downplay his contributions and remember his hsitoric number of GIDP. Since there are two differing perceptions of Perez's season, the final arbitor has to be the stats because they don't lie. They aren't fool proof but even the most conventional stats show that Perez is not very good.

Patterson has had a horrific season and has been painful to watch. The nicest thing I've read by even the biggest Patterson fan is that his season was disappointing. Even that very generous discription is a far cry from anyone claiming that Patterson was having a better year than Perez.

Both players have been villified- perhaps unjustly- as well as defended. The reason why many of us here continue to defend Patterson is that at age 26 he still has a glimmer of hope of becoming the player that we all hoped he'd become. Perez is as good as he's ever going to be. There's a better chance of Perez getting worse then there is that Patterson won't get at least a tiny bit better.

Patterson needs to get more than a tiny bit better to be of any value to anyone.

Frankly, I think he should go to Japan. Look what it did for Tuffy Rhodes' career!!

he has got to be on the block. i can't see where he fits in with what we do next year. it's pretty obvious we can't count on even.250 and 25hrs. we need someone to leadoff. if it's an outfieder, we can't afford to have a leadoff guy and corey (hitting .220 and batting eighth) in the outfield.that would also mean no way murton can play. i know hr's are slightly overarted but you can't have an outfield that hits 30 hrs total in wrigley!

As bad as has season has been, Patterson still has 12 HRs. Murton, over a full season should be able to hit 10. So as long as the RF hits at least 8 HRs The Cubs will be above that threshold.

LF Murton

2nd Walker

1st Lee

RF LH hitting new RF

3rd Ramirez

SS Nomar

C Barrett

CF Patterson

P

There's one way. The advantage of having Barrett- a good hitting catcher- is that it eases the pain of having low production from somewhere else.

Actually if Murton just hit home runs at the rate he so far has in the big leagues he would hit 14-17 homers over the course of a season. Seeing as how it is likely he hits for a bit more power as he adjusts to the majors and gets older, if he is given starters time I could see him as a 25 homer guy.
