The Cubs will call up some young players on Sept. 1, among them outfielder Matt Murton, and Hendry said Murton and Ronny Cedeno should get playing time in the final month.

"It's not like you're going to have 12 guys up here without big league experience," Hendry siad. "The product is still going to be the best we can put out. When Cedeno and Murton are playing, it's a positive, and I think that our fan base would appreciate that."

Not being in the playoff race is unusual for Baker.

"Eventually, you have to start thinking about [next year], but we want to end up [this season] the best we can," Baker said. "We owe that to ourselves, to our paying customers and out of respect to the game. We still respect the game; that's No. 1."

Sound like a couple of differing viewpoints to me.

Getting ready for a push in '06 should be foremost in the minds of everyone in the Cubs' organization.

It's hard to say if that's the case and they're just paying lip service to this year, or if they really believe it is wise to not think about '06 now.

I would imagine this offseason, unlike last year's, we will know rather quickly how serious this ballclub is about winning. There should be some money to spend from the get-go.

What else is new. Contrary to what Hendry says about being on the same page as Baker, they are not.

Baker always has an excuse handy when it comes to not playing the younger guys. Hopefully he sees the light.
I'd prefer that he see the door. :D

Are those the same paying customers that have been begging you to play the kids all year? As for "respecting the game", How is it respecting the game by sending out a bunch of veterans who don't can't execute the fundamentals of baseball?
