Anyone else notice on the replay of the first attempted DP that the runner was so far away from second as he slid toward Perez to break up the DP that he did not even touch the base? Could that have been called interference even tho Perez missed the base?

Yes, it could have.

How funny would that have been? The runner gets lucky with a call from the ump only to get called out for that.

And BACKTOBANKS, I completely agree with you. I've been one of the guys that has been lobbying to keep Maddux for next year. He may put guys on and give up some runs, but he gets the win more often than not. And that's what counts.

I thought the runner was safe. IMO, Perez clearly caught the ball after his foot came off the bag.

I know, the umps usually give the benefit of any doubt to the fielder on the 'neighbourhood play', but regardless, Neifi was off the bag, so really, the ump got it right...., this time.

The Cubs haven't lost a game Dempster has come in to close. Even if we had a closer with a WHIP below 1, the odds of pitching a perfect inning are against him. If you look at it in a very simplistic way, if a guy with a .90 WHIP pitched 10 innings, he'd allow a single baserunner in 9 of those innings. Of course this doesn't account for times when the pitcher would allow more than 1 baserunner an inning, errors, or other factors. That's as simple as I could lay it out, and don't expect this post to stand up under heavy duty statistical scrutiny.

That WHIP has taken a hit in the last month, good thing it hasn't hurt us yet.

Indeed.

Dempster IP H R ER BB K HR PC BB/9 K/9 HR/9 WHIP ERA

07/21 - 08/17 12.0 17 8 6 11 7 0 252 8.25 5.25 0.00 2.33 4.50

05/11 - 08/17 37.7 30 12 10 21 30 1 634 5.02 7.17 0.24 1.35 2.39

I wonder if batter's have adjusted their approach to facing Dempster, looking more to get on base through a walk instead of a base hit. That walk rate since July 21st is unsettling.
