but won't be, because its the Cubs and Dusty Baker we're discussing about here.

- PLEASE!!!! callup Corey Patterson. (you know how desperate the situation is when a person is begging to have Patterson called up!). I'm not gonna argue about Macias' "worth" to the team, its pointless, but there's a reason he's known for being an ok 25th man... and its NOT because he should be starting in CF everyday! Patterson may be having the worst offensive year so far, but its better having him out there defensively than watching guys score on singles, FROM 1st BASE!! :wall:

- And Hendry needs to get Dusty to agree to play Matt Murton at least twice a week (Burny/CPatt in CF, Lawton/Burny in RF, and Matt in LF) or send him down to get him some quality playing time in AA or AAA! Matt and/or Ronny being sent down to make room for Corey.

- PLEASE!!!! send Ronny Cedeno back down until 9/1. He's just "rotting" on the bench behind Nomar and Neifi. If Matt isn't sent down, then Ronny's leaving would make the necessary room to facilitate bringing Patterson back up.

- If Macias is the "25th man" then Perez should #22, Barrett #23, and Hollandsworth #24.

- Hendry should threaten Baker with something to get lineups like this for the majority of the time, at least until 9/1;

RF Lawton -- 2B Walker

2B Walker -- LF Murton

1B Lee -- 1B Lee

3B Ramirez -- 3B Ramirez

LF Murton -- RF Burnitz

SS Nomar -- SS Nomar

CF Patterson -- CF Patterson

C Blanco -- C Blanco

P pitcher -- P pitcher

*9/1 and after*

- make sure that Cedeno, Murton*, and Pie are part of the 15 guys called up in September

Why is Blanco ahead of Barrett?

Because of Barrett's defense, or lack thereof. Also, Blanco has come on strong lately with the bat.

Barrett's OPS is over .800, which is 4th among starting catchers in MLB. He should be starting, period.

Just like Macias "should be starting [in CF], period" because he's hitting .290 or over?

Yes, good job misunderstanding. Macias is at .671 right now, just a smidge better than your man Blanco.

Why is there such a love affair with Matt Murton here? I don't get it.

I can't speak for others but my feeling is the kid is hitting 400 and has a 500 OBP so let him get a chance to prove he does or doesn't belong. The Macias types have already proved that they stink so let Murton play for the rest of the season and see what happens.

I agree, I have no problem with Murton, but unless he develops a little bit of power you will need to make up for his lack thereof somewhere else.

He's young and takes walks. There's has to be another great hope after DuBois. :) If Murton could play 2b, I'd really like him. However, I'm not getting excited about an OF who lacks power and has average speed. If he had good speed, he'd be a nice cf.

Moves needed:

Bring up Patterson asap and get some defense on the field. The Cubs defense of late has been awful!!!!

Put Nomar in the 2 hole.

Make Rusch a starter, and put Hill in the pen.

As of Augut 15th, there's 5 off days. Dusty needs to skip Williams starts and go 4 man rotation when the Cubs have an off day. Yes, yes, Maddux isn't producing, but you can't sit a Hall of Famer like Maddux.

Have you seen the production of Lawton, Hollandsworth, Macias, & Burnitz lately? They can't hit, can't catch (except Burnitz), and can't throw (except Burnitz). That's why Murton deserves a chance.

sorry dude, but OPS is just a *little* more important than batting average.

I despise OPS. It's just far too crude. It adds two things that use different scales. A point of OBP is significantly more important than a point of SLG. So it's like adding 1 metre and 2 centimetres and coming up with 3.

I much prefer EqA ("A measure of total offensive value per out, with corrections for league offensive level, home park, pitching faced and position. EQA considers baserunning as well as batting. The scale is deliberately set to approximate that of batting average. Average is .260.")...

Lee, .356

Rammy, .308

Lawton, .276 (includes time with PIT)

Barrett, .273

Walker, .273

Burnitz, .266

Dubois, .257 (includes time with CLE)

Hairston, .249

Hollandsworth, .236

Neifi, .229

Macias, .235

Corey, .226

Blanco, .226

Everyone from Dubois down, there's been our problem. Far too many at-bats for players that can't or aren't hitting. I mean, Lee, Ramirez, Lawton, Barrett, Walker and Burnitz, there are six above average players relative to their position. The numbers of Garciaparra (.139) and Murton (.357) are irrelevant because they're simply not played enough, but I believe that they can provide at least average offence relative to their position. That then means a strong lineup. Just as long as Dusty runs out the lineup he fielded last night long enough. He had the right players last night though. Now he's got to wait for them to come good. It will happen, the team-wide slump won't last forever. He's got to resist the temptation to think that "we only scored 4 runs, they all came too late, therefore I got the wrong players in there".

Another .300 EqA player would make a world of difference though. If the Cubs could sign Brian Giles to a two year deal ($16m?) over the off-season, that'd be fantastic.
