Check out his column in the Trib this morning: Link

I think he's right - the 'pen is mightier than the sword (or bat).

In all seriousness, adding another arm to the pen to team w/ Wood and Williamson would be huge, and might be of greater importance than another bat, particularly in light of what appears to be available. Unlike many of you, I am not at all sold on Kearns. I'd rather let Murton play.

When you look at some the teams that have made deep runs over the past few years, one of the common denominators is three or four very reliable relievers.

The problem is you aren't the manager, Dusty the Dumbass is and he won't play Murton unless he absolutely has to.

I agree totally: Wood and Williamson aren't locks at all, tho it's a good bet they'll be very effective. So we have to get another good reliever.

As I posted in another thread, we are losing Remmy's contract after this year, Rusch is not that pricy, Demp will deservedly be...and then a bunch of young production. We can easily afford to pay for another talent worth $2-$3 million for a couple years and we need that talent this year.

More than LF, getting a very good reliver should be the top priority.

I think the bat is more important. With the current Cubs staff, 4-5 offensive runs should win most games. 6/12 of the losses in July occurred when the opponent scored <=4 runs. The Cubs should win most of those games, and maybe a big bat could have been the difference.

Now, having said that, the bat has to be a big bat. I like Gerut for the future, but adding another Gerut for the stretch-run doesn't help.

Matt Lawton would be nice. Hit him #2 and get Walker back down in an RBI spot.

The Cubs have a left fielder already. Problem is, the manager doesn't know it.[/b]
