By my count there are currently one open spot on the 40-man roster. Assuming Williamson is ready before Nomar, he gets the last spot. So somebody will have to be taken off when Garciaparra is ready.

FYI, I'm using the 40-man posted on the Cubs website.

The position players on the 40-man but not in Chicago are:

Mike Fontenot, IF

Richard Lewis, IF

Ben Grieve, OF

Corey Patterson, IF

Geovany Soto, C

Adam Greenberg, OF (DL)

Barring a trade, my guess is Grieve gets cut or Greenberg gets moved to the 60-day DL when Nomar comes back.

This also means that if the Cubs want another RH bat for the bench he's either going to come from outside the organization or somebody will get dumped to add another guy (Kelton, McClain, etc.) from the system.

As for pitching help for the pen, Van Buren, who a lot of people would like to see in Chicago, is not on the 40-man so somebody would need to go if the Cubs wanted to bring him up. Aardsma is on the 40-man however.

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this.

I think you're exactly right. Grieve is expendable, and Greenberg to 60-day DL is a possibility. Richie Lewis is also expendable if need be.

So I don't think there will be any problem.

If they do acquire somebody, it might well involved one or more 40-man prospects, so wouldn't necessarily add any stress and might relieve some.

So much for Rich Lewis being our savior at 2B.

I also think you're right, but I disagree that Grieve is expendable but I think that's exactly what the organization thinks.

My guess is some kind of deal will happen that will move 2-4 of our guys for 1-2 of someone elses players and that would also help.
