Just curious as to how you would do the lineup when Nomar comes back in early August.

Hairston (CF)

Walker (2B)

Nomar (SS)

Lee (1B)

Ramirez (3B)

Burnitz (RF)

Barrett ©

Murton (LF)

Pitcher (P)

Do you think he could get back into that 3 hole, or would he start out down further at 6 or 7?

i dont think he can just jump in at #3. an ease-in period of a few games might be a good idea. although, he is a veteran, so he should get the respect of picking his own spot. but, eventually, that looks like a good lineup.

Shouldn't the thread read "IF" Nomar comes back? I'd be surprised if he does...

It's been reported that he could be back in early August, I think they said he's on schedule to return in early August.

I agree with you, I don't know how he can come back in August and play everyday after tearing his groin four months previous. Ramirez was having problems with his groin the last two months of the season last year after only straining it. I don't think he'll be back. If he does, I don't see how he can play every day.

All it takes is one slip out of the box (like he did when he injured himself) and his groin will rip into shreds like tissue paper on Xmas Day

I wouldn't mess with the top of the lineup. Red Sox had him batting 5th before he got traded to the Cubs. I'd go with this:

hairston

walker

lee

aram

nomar

burnitz

murton/hollandsworth

barrett

Well I suppose I should have posted IF, but from Mark O'neals comments and Nomars comments I thought it was all but assumed he'd be back in very early august.

I thought he was going to a AAA rehab in two weeks?

Well, whenever he comes back, I'll be holding my breath every time he comes to the plate or goes to his l/r to field a ball...

It's been said they expect him back August 1st if all goes well with his rehab in AAA. Will that actually happen? After the way last years injuries were handled, call me a skeptic.

But if he does come back, and can actually move laterally, I'd like to see this lineup:

1. Hairston - CF

2. Nomar - SS

3. Lee - 1B

4. Ramirez - 3B

5. Burnitz - RF

6. Barrett - C

7. Walker - 2B

8. Holly - LF

The only problem is see with this is that I'm grouping the two left handed Todd's in the back of the order. So because of that, I'm coming up with a back up plan:

1. Hairston - CF

2. Walker - 2B

3. Lee - 1B

4. Ramirez - 3B

5. Burnitz - RF

6. Nomar - SS

7. Barrett - C

8. Holly - LF

Possibly switch Nomar and Burnitz in this line up. If Nomar can return to the .300+ hitter that he was, his average will help protect Aramis. I think Burnitz could handle hitting 6th for a little while.

And if you want to get real crazy, why not throw Nomar into the leadoff role?

Career OBP of .368

Career OPS of .912

And he used to be able to steal a bag every now and then.

And now that I've said that, I'm going to duck out of the way of flying objects.

Piazza had the same injury and was able to come back the same year, at a position where the groin is under alot more stress. I don't see why Nomar can't come back.

This is what I'd do as well. Plus get Murton in LF often.

Depends on how you define that stress. Is squatting for 9 innings worse than the quick lateral movements you have to make at shortstop? I would think going from side to side is much more dangerous.

That is what I'd like to see, but probably not what Dusty will put out there.

I'd say they're both about as dangerous as the other. With squatting, you've got constant pressure on your groin (and Piazza is no small dude). Going side-to-side blocking the pitches in the dirt and such also puts stress on the groin.

Well, I disagree. Another thing to remember is that when Piazza went down, his OPS was over 1000, after returning it was about 700. Now, Nomar doesn't have to worry about getting worse, as he was off to a truly awful season. However, even if he did come back, I still wouldn't expect much. He was below average defensively, and will be worse. And he won't be much of an offensive threat.

The bottom line is, don't count on Nomar to be the difference between the sub .500 start and a playoff push in the second half. He'll be a small role player at best if he even does come back. The winning will have to come from the starting pitching, Lee, Ramirez, Walker, Hairston and Burnitz.

Piazza used to block pitches in the dirt?
