CUBS WIN COMEBACK THRILLER 10-8

Daytona Overcame a Six-Run Deficit And Robinson Chirinos Stroked A Three-Run Bomb In The Final Frame

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—Tuesday night reminded fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark just how much fun the Daytona Cubs can be to watch when things are going well.

 

Coming in on the heels of a three-game losing streak and a 4-13 start to the second half, the Cubs were looking to find a way to show fans the same promise and potential that they flashed in their second place finish for the first half.

 

Enter Game 2 of the four-game set against the Tampa Yankees, and an opportunity for the Cubs to finally show signs of life.

 

Despite an early six-run deficit Daytona refused to quit, as they answered the call with a five-run seventh frame and a dramatic three-run homerun from Robinson Chirinos in the bottom half of the ninth to complete the comeback and win by a final of 10-8.

 

The Yankees came out swinging early, as they posted a seven-run bottom half of the fourth inning fueled by a three-run homerun from Justin Christian, putting Tampa up 8-2. But the Cubs relied on a solid effort from the bullpen as four relievers came to the aid of starter Yorkin Ferreras and held the Yanks to just one earned run in the final 5.1 innings of the game.

 

Nate Sevier (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth and was the pitcher of record when Chirinos stroked his game-winning blast as the righty won his second game of the season.

 

Yankees closer Paul Thorpe (1-2) squandered an opportunity to notch his 19th save as he gave up the final three runs in the ninth and was charged with his second loss of the ’05 campaign.

 

The Cubs were led at the plate by catcher Tony Richie who went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI to raise his average to .313 in the winning effort. Designated hitter Jake Fox also added a two-run homerun in the fourth inning and scored two runs in a 1-for-3 night with the bat.

 

With the win, Daytona snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-13, as the Yankees dropped to 5-12 with the crushing defeat.

 

The two teams will head right back to “The Jack” for Game 3 on Wednesday night, as the Cubs send righty Juan Mateo (6-3, 4.14 ERA) to the hill to battle Yankees righty Steven White (0-0, 10.12 ERA).

 

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
