If the Yankees have any sense of humor — and they generally do not — they will draft Jeffrey Maier next June. The Wesleyan University junior hit .350 this season and led the team in slugging, on-base percentage, doubles and triples. Maier, you may remember, is the New Jersey kid who changed a 1996 playoff game against Baltimore by swiping Derek Jeter's fly ball, turning it into a home run.

This is from benmaller.com. I thought it was kinda funny.

Yeah, I saw a story on him a few years ago in which they chronicled him watching game 7 of the 2003 ALCS against Boston with a mixed crowd of Boston/Yankees fans. It was pretty entertaining. That would be quite the irony if he was drafted by the Yanks.

Wouldn't irony be him getting drafted by the O's?

Maybe if the Yanks drafted him and one day he winds up costing them a trip to the W.S.

I still remember the image of him riding that guy's shoulders. I am a collector of Ripken memorabilia. Needless to say I was crushed.
