I think he still had options left, so he could stay down there the rest of the season.

Considering how much we are paying the guy, is that really an option?

Better than watching him struggle on the big club

My understanding is that he already went through waivers.

In any event, Corey at this point has only used one option of three (prior to yesterday's option) - his MLS (major league service) is currently at 4+. He could be optioned to the minor leagues as long as we secure Major League waivers on him in order to option him down. (Major League waivers are required to option a player once he has attained three years from the time he initially reported to the major leagues.)

It looks like the Cubs already got him through waivers and now he only has one option left.

Once Corey’s MLS reaches 5 he would need to consent to being optioned to the minor leagues.

I don't see why not. Why should length of contract determine that a guy continually sucks on the big league club?

The Yankees were seriously considering sending Giambi down and he's making several times more than Patterson.

If someone isn't cutting it and a trip to the minors can straighten them out, it shouldn't matter how much they're making.

Yes, a trip to the minors, not the rest of the season. If the guy truely cannot cut it, then cut the losses altogether and get rid of him, dont pay him millions to play on the farm.

He only has a 1 year contract for 1.5 mil. It isn't like he is being paid a truckload of money.

I think in Giambi's case (and most major leaguers with 5+ years) he would have had to pass through waivers and there is NO WAY anyone would have picked him up given the size of his contract.

The better question is..... at what point does bringing him back up become a viable option:

06/06 - 07/07 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Patterson 100 6 16 2 2 1 25 4 5 33 0.160 0.200 0.250 0.450
