Batting .263 with 5 homers.

Whatever...

He's been vocal for awhile now that he's quite unhappy with his playing time in Boston. He's a free agent next year I believe and doesn't want to be labelled as a reserve. Word has it he will be shipped to Oakland in a trade.

someone in the Gammons thread said posted a rotoworld blurb saying that Payton is about to be moved to Oakland for a reliever.

That means that a Kotsay trade to someone is imminent.

Or, Gammons is full of beans.

Either scenerio could work.

well if the Cubs don't end up with Kotsay in a potential trade I'd say both will stink. <>

Very true. And I wouldn't be suprised by either.

Just looking at his OBP in a vacuum, Payton doesn't appear to be a prototypical Beane guy. He might be destined for San Diego.

Perhaps Beane is interested in defense/bench presence more than OBP from Jay

That might be. By the way, I think Mark Kotsay has a $6.5M player option for 2006. There has been some speculation that he'd opt for free agency aftre the 2005 season in hopes of getting a 3 year $16-18M range deal. I believe that $6.5M figure may go up to $7.5M in the event he's traded.

So if we were to trade for him would he become just a one year rental? Or would signing him to a 2 yr deal allow the Cubs to let Pie develop longer in the minors?

I'd imagine that the Cubs picking up or extending that option would be a precondition of trading for Kotsay at this point. Given our play of late, would it be wise to trade for a 1 yr rental when we're 7 back and trailing 5 teams?

Well, that would make that horrible trade San Diego made to get Dave Roberts look a little better. (Jay Payton, Ramon Vazquez, minor leaguer and cash for Roberts)

However, San Diego just got Eric Young back, so I don't think they will call on Payton.
