I have never understood this. There are just not enough lefty starting pitchers to make it worthwhile to call up a rookie to face only lefties. It might be sensible if you feel the rookie in question will never amount to anything more than a part-time/utility player but otherwise I don't get it. Cedeno and Dubois just look like wasted callups to me. They're not going to progress facing only lefties. This seems perfectly obvious to me. Honestly I think every right-handed hitting position prospect in the Cubs system would do himself a huge favor by learning how to switch hit.

I'm there too....like Dubois and Cedeno have never faced right-handed pitching since they started playing ball

It doesn't have to be complicated. The GM should simply ask the manager if he is prepared to let the rookie face right-handed pitching. If the answer is yes, then the kid is available for callup, if no, then the kid stays in the minors. This should be a standard communication between every GM and field manager. Instead we see things like Cedeno being called up and then sitting around waiting for a lefty to face. This stuff puzzles me.

It also makes the opposing manager's job easier. Let's see, I can leave in my right handed pitcher to face Jose Macias, who isn't much of a threat with a bat, or I can bring in my lefty to face this guy who has absolutely torn up AAA pitching?

Let's leave the kid on the bench by leaving our righty bullpen guy in there. Then we can save the LOOGY for Burnitz, Patterson or Hollandsworth.

Some (and even a lot) of MLB players are good at hitting right handed pitching, because they get such a steady dose of it. Cedeno is hitting right handers pretty well so far in his short stint. Keep sitting him on the bench, and I'm sure he'll become quite rusty the next time he gets the opportunity to see one.

I'm at the point where I believe that if Dusty is resigned Hendry should only draft switch hitters or lefthanded hitters in the future. Dusty could stay in Chicago another 10 years and we still wouldn't develop any purely right-handed batting prospects. They should all be traded if Dusty is resigned.

Dusty resigned? God, I hope not.

We can thank the moron Dusty for that.

But it's not justy Dusty. A lot of managers do that with their young lefties.

If these guys are supposed to be a key part of the future, they have to learn to hit lefties too. Might as well start now and give them some practice.

I don't think it's so bad to call up a lefty-hitting rookie to hit against righty pitchers, because there are so many righties. What irks me is calling up rookies to play exclusively against left-handed pitching, simply because starting LHP's are scarce. There's far too much downtime involved and the best-case scenario is that you end up with a hitter who is only competent against a small segment of MLB pitching. It's stupid. IMO if you're not going to let rookies face righties then they're better off in the minors.
