As of this morning, the cardinals have the weakest schedule in all of MLB. While the cubs have the 13th toughest in MLB and the 6th toughest in the NL

STL SOS .476 Cubs SOS .502

The cubs also have the exact record that they should have according to Bill james' prediction using runs scored.

As far as RPI the cubs are .500 and ranked even with the detroit tigers.

I don't buy into this whole strength of schedule thing. Yeah, they have a weaker one right now, but by the end of the season, it'll be pretty close to evening out. The fact is, they are beating the teams they are supposed to be beating, and we're not. If we can't right the ship by the end of this Braves series, we'll have blown a golden opportunity to get right back in the wild card hunt. We can't worry about the Cards anymore. We need to win, plain and simple.

As Catman pointed out over in Rivalries, the Cards have the weakest schedule because they don't play themselves.

This whole strength of schedule gripe is really beside the point.

I wasn't griping, just pointing out facts.

If you notice I also posted that the cubs are doing what's expected of them giving their runs scored and have a record equal to their RPI which indicates they are truly a .500 team.

As far as playing yourself....the cubs have only faced the cards twice this year and their SOS is 25 points higher

I have a question about strength of schedule...

I would assume that the win% used in calculating the teams the have played doesn't include when they played that team.

I dont know if thats clear so say for example that a team who is beating everbody, you would ignore all the losses from that great team. Otherwise teams who are just doing a good job of beating everyone would not have a "weaker schedule" because you only count the oppenents other games. Does this make sense?

And the facts are that of the 162 games that each team will play, 14 games are different. This isn't like college football where top teams often don't face common opponents and you only play 1 game per year vs any team (sans playoffs) Of the 146 games not played vs each other, 132 are vs the same teams the same number of times.

The facts are also that for a large part of the season the SOS can be somewhat distorted because of who HAS been played and not reflecting the common opponents YET to be played and/or the imbalance in the the number of games already played vs common opponents with same number of games against (such as Cardinals have played 6 of 16 vs MIL while the Cubs have played 13 of 16)

at the end of the year the cubs sos will also be higher because you have to play the cardinals 16 times and they are a .650 team where as we have to play the cubs who are right now a .500 team. i dont think the cubs will stay .500 but those will alter the sos
