JUst out of curiosity. If mitre was the 5th starter and doing average or slightly above average, how easy would it be for everyone here to replace him with Guzman when he has shaken off the rust.

Essentially, Guzman is on a rehab assignment right now. Isn't it easier to replace Dempster in this kind of spot? I guess similar to the school of thought of having a minor leaguer get to play everyday or have them be on a the bench for the big club.

It'd be very easy for me. Guzman has much more talent and potential than Mitre. He was ahead of Mitre in 2003 on the depth chart before he got hurt. And as you put it, he's basically prepping himself for the 5th starter spot.

It might be easier to replace a veteran, but we have to wait about 2 months - 10 or so starts with an inferior pitcher starting in the mean time. Even considering all that about Mitre, I'd rather him or Rusch start. The Cubs are putting themselves at a disadvantage they don't have to by sending Dempster out when they could send out Rusch or Mitre.

Feel free to add Dusty's usage of Zambrano, today, April 9. 4 run lead, over 100 pitches thrown and he sends him back out for another inning. During the inning, Z was visited by the trainer's twice, gave up a walk (on a 90 mph fastball) and was FINALLY taken out. Maybe Z's problem will be nothing, but this didn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I thought he should have taken Z out in the 1st when Z was clearly in pain.

Oh well though. 110ish pitches isn't too bad, and Z seems to be able to handle it. But I agree, Z shouldn't have gone out for the 7th.

And Z nearly killed himself on the basepaths. I love the guy, but by God he's gonna get injured one day. And it won't be from pitching! Either he'll try to bare-hand a comebacker, or he'll break somes bones on the basepath.

Glad to see we still feel the need to send Hawkins out there on back to back days so he can close out that four run lead.

Meh, I think that one was more of a confidence-builder. But ugh, down the stretch last year was brutal.

Who's going to close tomorrow if we have a 2 run lead in the ninth? Whatever the opposite of a confidence buster is, that's what we're going to see tomorrow if Leroy blows another save. We've all seen the numbers on how Hawkins does after pitching on consecutive days and all that.

Agreed. It wasn't enough that Dusty overthrew both Wood and Prior in 2003, leading to serious injuries, no, he won't be content until Zambrano gets his own TJS.

Zambrano should have been done after 7. Sending him out there for the 8th is borderline criminal. Sore forearm, indeed.

oh come on Don...no sense of humor about this stuff yet? There has to be some part of you that wants to have a good time with the Cubs and actually praise them for something some times right?

This thread is about Baker. I'll let you know when there's anything worthy of praise wrt this doofus and how he manages the Cubs. Here's a hint though: Don't hold your breath.

Could we possibly keep Dusty as some sort of figurehead like the Queen of England to appease all the Dusty-butt-kissers?

Then we can just hire a "head coach" to call the shots. Sound good?

Dusty could be the Cubs' new mascot, since he's such a great motivator.

I've been suggesting this (actually, a football offensive/defensive coordinator system) since at least early last year.

edit: to be clear, dusty=head coach, pitching coach=defensive coordinator, hitting coach=offensive. And dusty isn't the one making substitutions

It would never work. Too often offensive and pitching changes are tied to each other (e.g. pinch hitting, double switches) for those decisions to be able to be made independently by different coaches.

I blame Dusty for this victory.

man oh man do i love bumping this thread

Early reports suggest that Neifi is going to start at second base and bat second today. Probably because he's better than Hairston at nothing.

Dusty sucks. I'm tired of this crap with Neifi and Macias getting playing time over Hairtson and Dubois. It's a joke.

Levine on ESPN 1000 said Neifi would be starting.
