Madrigal led off the first with a 13 pitch FO to RF. He swung at 9 of the first 12 pitches, which according to pitchtraxx, all would've been called strikes. The only pitch out of the strike zone was pitch 13 which was borderline, too close to take, and he flew out. Great AB for an out.

iirc, he's done okay vs velocity this year, but he's been struggling vs offspeed. I wonder if he's cheating a bit to stay on the fastballs and ends up overcommitted against offspeed.

It's now been more than 3 months of Steele being very good. Since 5/15, his first against the Dbacks, and through 3 IP today:

 

17 GS, 88.2 IP, 80 H, 6 HR, 33 BB, 99 K, 2.86 ERA

 

It's a little harder to back of the napkin FIP, but it's likely just a smidge over 3 so he's not crazy lucky or anything. Gotta start working a bit deeper into games but hot damn

Starting next year with Stroman, Steele, FA, Hendricks, Keegan with a handful of alternate options if Hendricks continues his decline actually sounds pretty damn great right about now.

Yeah pending the quality of the FA that's likely a fairly average starting 5. But Alzolay as the long guy in the pen plus Kilian/Wesneski at Iowa is very very good depth, and really raises the floor.

He's a really interesting call. If he keeps up even 80% of what he's done so far, it'll feel really horsefeathers to keep him in Iowa. But he certainly shouldn't be given a spot in the starting 5, and doesn't feel particularly well suited to relief during the periods where everyone ahead of him is healthy. He might get a courtesy trade.
