Felix Stevens blasted a game-tying three-run HR over the scoreboard in left-centerfield in the 7th, and SP Tyler Schlaffer tossed four innings of two-hit ball for the Cuibs in a losing cause. (The two hits surrendered by Schlaffer were the Nick Heath HR in the top of the 1st and the Nick Heath lead-off triple in the top of the 4th). The Stevens HR was his second dinger in four EXST games, and both were moon shots.

In 13 PA over the course of the Cubs first four EXST games, Owen Caissie has reached base ten times (four doubles, three singles, and three walks), and there was nothing cheap-o about any of the hits, either.

I assume Howard already being out of the game is a load management thing, but definitely a bit concerned

Michael Hermosillo is on an incredible run with Iowa. He was hurt the first month, but in his limited time back he was at .389/.522/.722 BEFORE going 2/2 with a double and a walk so far tonight. I feel like this winter he was probably the most interesting of the AAA lottery tickets, so it's interesting to see him come out of the gate like this.

Yeah, just 26 and was once a top 10 organizational prospect with LAA. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I watched the plays before he was removed. There was a pickoff play at 1B. He dove back in and the ball got away. It looked the ball hit him in the back on the pickoff. He showed no ill effects, popping up right away and ran to 2B. It didn't look like a particularly hard throw either. Then Pinango hit a weak liner to the secondbaseman. He flipped to the SS who tagged Howard as he was diving back to 2B for a double play to end the inning.

Nothing looked out of the ordinary. Howard was talking to the first base coach while walking back to the dugout. He didn't seem in pain. He could've been saying he shouldn't have gotten doubled off. He could've been describing that he tweaked his shoulder diving back in. In either case, he wasn't in obvious pain. His removal from the game could've been previously scheduled. That would seem a bit odd though understandable. It also could've been done out of extreme caution. Tough to say. Regardless, if he did tweak something, it didn't appear serious.

This isn't a knock on being cautiously optimistic at all. I just wonder what impact, if any, Wisdom's unexpected success (and to some extent Alcantara's as well) has had on us taking note of other older former prospects getting hot in AAA.

I know me personally, I wouldn't be putting much stock in it. But your eyes do get opened to the possibility of it being meaningful because of what we've seen from guys with previous pedigree now doing well in the bigs.

Morel excluding his Horsefeathers first two weeks is now at .225/.352/.438 with 5 SBs, 17 BBs, AND 18 Ks. The Southern League is so tough that's a 122 wRC+. And he still only has a .235 BABIP over that time (again though, it's much tougher to attribute BABIP swings to luck for minor leaguers.

Davis is up to .250/.389/.386 with a 126 wRC+. The Ks are too high, but he's only been at it for 13 games (and he has not had K problems previously)

Chase Strumpf is at .200/.302/.327 for an 81 wRC+. His K rate is similar to Brennen's. Unlike Brennen, his swing and miss has been an issue for a while. Still pretty early though, he's only got 14 AA games under his belt

Amaya before we got hurt (do we know his issue yet?) was at .215/.406/.304 with 21 BBs and 22 Ks (117 wRC+). Zero power, but power is by far the streakiest hitter attribute, and it hasn't been an issue for him historically.

All four guys have shown warts, but except for Amaya it's pretty aggressive for each guy to be at AA right now. I'd guess that at least two of these guys are at Iowa before the end of the season, and all four open up next season there.
