he's right about the lead though. that opening week really fucked up their chance to build a lead over the brewers while they were going through their toughest part of the schedule. on paper we should pull away from that team but it hasn't happened over the last 2 seasons. but again i guess that's to be expected when we decided not to get better in the offseason.

I mean we did very well against that easyish schedule and dropping 2 games against the reds doesn’t change that. Also I believe when all is said and done the reds will be pretty good

Eh, I don't know about any of this. That shitty opening week was followed by like a 22-6 record. They have done more than enough early on considering going into yesterday they had like the best record in the National League.

The fact is the Cubs are in a really competitive division and pulling away this early likely wasn't going to happen. I just feel fortunate they are where they are considering everyone but Cubswin11 wrote them off after the first week.

Its mid May.. gotta be fairly happy with the results so far. Rarely does anyone have a big lead at this point.

i'm not really trashing the cubs, i'm just once again sharing my extreme aggravation over the brewers

The Astros division is just so bad, must be nice. Selig never should’ve moved the VBs out the the AL. But he did to make their revenue increase with a dozen or so home games against the Cubs every year.

Yeah, my baseball life would be so much better had that never happened.

Well, yeah, due in no small part to the owners/FO just deciding to punt trying to put a better team out there.

Nah.

At this point, Bryce Harper wouldn't have us much more ahead in the race.

brantley (2 years, $32 million) is hitting .329/.379/.575 and has already been worth 1.8 war. there were relievers available, too.

Sorry; it was apparently Harper or nothing.

Based on our board throughout the ENTIRE winter, you are damn horsefeathering right it was.

But, yes, let's cherry pick Michael Brantley and pretend everyone wanted him.

ETA: Even if we had Brantley, we still wouldn't be way ahead in the standings. Which is the point.

Not at all. The point is that right now had we signed one or two guys we wouldn't have some large lead that was being talked about. That's all. It does not mean that over the long haul not being active is not going to come back and bite the Cubs.

It means that right now, we would not have a big lead no matter what because the Brewers have been too good as of May 17 to have gotten that far ahead.

What's the issue here?

That you keep tossing out very specific scenarios as if those were the Cubs' only options.

They could have and should have done better.
