Eugene: RHP Jeffrey Passantino (9.2 IP, 3.72 ERA, 2.01 FIP, 2.69 xFIP, 12 K, 2 BB)

Still not sure why they sent our stout adult son back to Eugene. 11/2 K/BB with 6 H and 1 HR in 7.2 IP sure looks like it played to me.

They needed starter innings once Jeremiah Estrada got hurt the week before Eugene’s season started. I don’t think it’s anything against Passantino’s ability as generally team’s place a SP one level lower than they would if he were a reliever.

Outside of the 17-year-olds in the DSL worth watching:

The Cubs may have found something in LHP Luis Rodriguez. Despite being 18, this is his first season in the DSL. Would love to know more about his stuff, but he's got okay size (6'1" 190 lbs.) and hasn't had a bad outing yet. In 6 appearances, his worst is a 4 inning, 2 hit, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K performance. Through 18.2 IP, he's allowed 8 H, 3 R (all earned), 2 BB and 20 Ks for a WHIP of 0.55, a BAA of .127 and an ERA of 1.47.

Another non-17 year old I've been keeping an eye on is 6'6", 200 lbs. lefty Johan Lopez. He's a 19-year-old, but tall pitchers (especially tall lefties) tend to develop a little more slowly and this is his first season in pro ball. He's yet to have a bad outing as well. In 5 starts and 18.1 innings, he's allowed 11 hits, 4 ER, 10 BB against 21 Ks with a .172 BAA, 1.15 WHIP and 1.96 ERA. His height likely gives him an advantage in causing ground balls as his GO/AO is 4.50.

Obvious SSS and DSL competition caveats apply, but guys to monitor going forward.
