Wasn't Dylan Cease slotted to start yesterday or did I miss read that? If I didn't, unless he warmed up to the point of not being able to go, he should be one of the 2 South Bend starters today.

Also, welcome to your professional baseball career Thomas Hatch!

I'll keep as much an eye on Happ as I can tonight. Is anyone else in Iowa worth watching?

The SP Mills, Candelario, and Zagunis. Basically, the heart of the order and the starting pitcher. Please subscribe to my newsletter for more keen insight.

23 year old Kyle Funkhouser just had his way with the young South Bend lineup in Game 1. 9 Ks in 5 innings. D.J. Wilson with 2 Ks. Paredes, Galindo, and Peguero with 1. Not surprising to see old collegiate talent dominate young hitters though.

I like Caritini a good bit if his defense is any good. I also wouldn't be surprised if Young turned out to be a BABIP-regressed version of Lemahieu.

ETA - call it the 2 WAR 2015 campaign: .301/.358/.388 89 wRC+...that ballpark, maybe a bit better if the power comes. Nothing too crazy but could be a decent bench guy or high secondary trade piece if the FO is patient.

6 up, 6 groundball outs for Hatch in his pro debut. Milb gameday is extremely suspect, but according to it, he's all around the edges and is not getting calls.

Candelario grand slam. Also all of Iowa has a great eye at the plate. Also... whoever batted 1st for Iowa (Andreoli) led off with a double to the gap.

Hatch goes 5 1 1 0 3 2. 78 pitches, 42 strikes. 11-1 ground outs/fly outs.

1) Its extremely impressive we started him in MB. That's the first guy under Theo we've done that with. He was supposedly getting squeezed, so the walks aren't bothersome. And the 11-1 ratio speaks for itself.

A few mode starts like this and he's going to start getting some prospect love from the national guys.

Tyson Miller goes 4.2 4 0 0 1 7. 75-47 strikes. 3-0 groundouts to flyouts.

Last years pitching looking very good after one start.

Candelario made an excellent play, showing off his arm at 3rd in the 3rd inning, then scalded a ball into the shift. He's been excellent tonight.

Caratini blasts a triple.

Then fourth rounder Tyson Miller dominates at South Bend, with 4.1 IP 4 H 0 R 0 1 BB 7 K with no outs in the air. 6'5" college righty from a small school who can supposedly works 90-93 but can get it to 96. Only K'd 17 guys in 28 pro innings last year but was decent at a small school with 237 in 272 innings. I know nothing about mechanics but he looks a bit stiff in the video at this link. Seems like maybe they could get more velo if they could loosen him up.

Guess I just read the Hatch part and my brain pulled a "this doesn't look like anything to me" with the Miller part. But yeah good night for me the 2016 pitching.

Nah, I bet you read it before I added the Miller part.

Tseng is just 22, in repeating AA. He went 5 4 1 1 0 7 tonight. 73-47 strikes, 4-1 ground outs to fly out. Yet another good start tonight.

Mills is getting roughed up in the 4th though.

Mills gave up lots of deep fly balls in the 3rd too.

Also I will continue to have shotgun on the Mekkes hype train: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3/1 K/BB

I could see him move VERY quickly. If the deception is as good as has been talked about, it wouldn't shock me to see him in Tennessee this year.

Good night for Silverio too. 3 IP no hits or walks 6 Ks. I'd never heard of him til 20 minutes ago but seems like a decent story.

22 6'2 from the Dominican, played DSL in 2013 and 2014, AZ in 2015, Eugene in 2016. Ended up starting and winning game 2 of the Emeralds first playoff series. They were down 0-1 in the series, he went 5 striking out 8 and allowing 2 hits with no runs. They won and went on to win the title without him starting again.

He's always been pretty good with hit suppression (career .216 BAA) but last year his Ks ticket up to 46 in 44 innings. Thing was that his walks also balloon to where he had 30 of them in that 44 IP (compared to 10 in 41 in 2015). In that playoff game he won he managed to pitch around 4 walks.

So it seems like the walks will be by far the thing to watch with him. Good start so far. But as with any pitcher I pick out at random first week from A ball I know nothing about his stuff. Anyone know anything about him and want to vouch for him?
