Damn.

I'm starting to think some of you are privileged, white, baseball fans.

Most of us are!

For the record, I want Bryce Harper, too.

But let's just be grateful we all decided to be Cubs fans, because I imagine to small and mid market fans, we sound like some real spoiled bitches.

Those owners aren't poor either.

ah so you're white & straight

I'm surprised you didn't mention "privileged" too

That was implied. I already know your opinion but I'll ask it anyways, do you think white straight guys don't enjoy privileges? I mean, can you name a person who owns a baseball team that isn't a straight white guy? I can only think of one, and he spends more than PTR, and he supports a few progressive things, so to Boombox's other absurd point where he asks what more we could hope for out of an owner...

Well, your assumption is wrong. I do think white straight guys enjoy privileges or advantages in life. I do consider myself lucky in life, but I'm not going to feel bad about myself for being a white straight guy.

Actually, I'm not sure which non-white owner in baseball you are talking about...I just assume they are all white.

Speaking of the Ricketts, doesn't co-owner Laura do a lot of progressive things and do a lot of charitable work?

A) I didn't decide to become a fan of a team.

B) Oh yes, let's be grateful for the lifelong supply of joy and goodness that the Cubs have given us all.

C) The Ricketts in particular very famously never presided over any losing seasons.

She's 1/5th of the group and supports some LGBTQ causes and still very much supports billionaire-centric policies.

Also, doing charity is like the bare minimum rich people can do to not be awful. Every one of these guys has a cause they support for PR (and tax) purposes.

All the owners are rich. But those rich owners spend $100 million less than our rich owner. I'm sure those fans will cry us a river.

Seriously, do people just ignore the fact that the Ricketts family led this team into the crapper, on purpose, for many years, to supposedly be able to provide a decade long string of successes? We went through the BS "debt servicing" years already. We went through the "woe is us I can't believe what state the tribune company left this team in" years.

We lived through that crap with the promise of massive spending later. They can't back down from that now.

I agree mostly with TT. If the Cubs don't make an offer to Harper or the offer is significantly less than what he signs for, this is mostly on the front office. It seems like Theo and Co have changed their operating assumptions that pitching is a premium and value is in the offense. Maybe Chatwood burned them, but given his track record, it shouldn't have. I think picking up Hammels option was short-term thinking that is going to hurt long-term success. Players like Harper who hit free agency in their 20s are pretty rare.

Having said all that, I don't think the Ricketts are living up to their statements when they bought the Cubs. By-and-large they are despicable. Anyone who supports a regime that separates children from their families as a means of deterrence doesn't get the benefit of the doubt on anything.

I'm not telling you to care. I'm just saying you all sound like complete, spoiled brats.

The Cubs are 733-725 under the ownership of the Ricketts family, and average 81-79 per season. They've only been anywhere close to aggressive financially in 2 of 9 years. To have the audacity to claim that they've done all they can do in terms of payroll is [expletive] disgusting. They worked hard to suppress payroll for half a decade before even thinking about trying to win games. This is the first year they will flirt with the top of the payroll lists, after raking in tons of cash, and to get cold feet now is absolutely ridiculous.

Apologizing for their belt tightening is pathetic.

you sound like a boot licking buffoon

We are fans of one of the highest payroll teams in the Major Leagues.

You sound like every other rich, white guy who demands more.

So.........they are fulfilling the promise?

Are there reports that we won't be one of the highest payroll teams in the foreseeable future?

This is all in the context of everyone being fans of sports teams owned by billionaires. To act like someone complaining about a team that spends $75 million vs. one that spend $175 million is somehow NOT a "complete, spoiled brat" is ludicrous.

Again...who cares? They should spend even more, especially in this offseason.

you're just going to ignore the point where they spent half a decade not spending at all and keep congratulating them for spending once. There is no point to this. You are a lickspittle.

I have no feeling towards the Ricketts as owners one way or another.

But you are ignoring that the franchise and everything about it was crap, from the management to the facilities to the minor leagues, when they took over. I was all for a complete rebuild with the promise that it would pay off. It paid off. It still is paying off.

What?

You are babbling.

It's paying off for the Ricketts, they are making money hand over fist. They won one world series. They've barely crossed over the .500 level as an ownership group.

I've constantly read on here that this is the best time ever to be a Cubs fan. Who all got to see them win a World Series just a few years ago. They remain, according to many on here, one of the best teams in baseball coming off a 95-win season.

Using their all-time record is clearly distorting things, and you know it.
