Without knowing exactly how much we need to free up (which makes this tough, obviously), which of these scenarios would you prefer (so factoring in both who we are dumping and how much it frees up + how we have to replace them, if at all)?

I'd operate under the assumption that these moves MIGHT return a little value, but will basically function as salary dumps without a significant 2016 impacting return.

Pick a few guys if you want and explain below.

Coghlan, most easily replaceable and becomes kind of useless/redundant if Heyward is added. I think we need the other 3 to be a really good team next year and trading any of Montero, Wood, Hammel opens up potential holes/areas of concern. Edited by Cubswin11

Montero is a non-starter for me. We need his pitch-framing and not complete worthlessness on offense.

Coghlan is easy to let go.

I wish Tim could institute some kind of Phpbb thing where a water gun popped out of the computer and squirted right in the face anyone who tries to get us back down to five acceptable starters.

Wood I can live with letting go, but I'm not thrilled with it.

I totally agree with you all the way that we need some injury protection in the rotation.

That said, it's really tempting to slot Warren into the rotation at $1.5M and then look at what you can get for Hammel (and Hammel's $10M) that seems much more valuable than a fill in starter (who, admittedly, will likely get a significant share of starts).

I think I may be Hammel's biggest supporter here, so that's not where I'd go.

I'd like to avoid trading Montero at this point, if possible. Now, if it came down to him or Hammel, I'd trade Miggy. But I'd avoid it if at all possible while still signing Heyward.

Trading Coghlan doesn't really save us that much and hurts our OF depth. But, in the end, meh.

I think we have sufficient depth in the pen at this point to move Wood. It also saves us a fair bit of cash. I'd prefer to keep him if we can afford it, but he's the first one I'd jettison if we need cash for Heyward.

I picked both pitchers, just to make Kyle mad. In reality, I think Wood is an easy choice. We still have plenty of rotation depth with Hammel, and now Warren, Cahill, and Ricahrd. I don't see why we would need 9 guys that could make the rotation. That's superfluous. If it gets past Cahill, then we would be in pretty big trouble anyway. And, still, at that point, we could make a trade in-season for a placeholder, or go all-out and make a trade for a legitimate rotation piece.

Wood, Cahill nor Richard all have no realistic chance of making the rotation. Your plan worked.

I meant "make the rotation if there is an injury and they are forced into action."

Basically, I am happy with Hammel and Warren as 5 & 6. After that, they all kinda suck as starters. But I don't see the need for three kinda-shitty-as-starters swing men, who are decent in the pen. If we have to use Clayton Richard or Trevor Cahill as a starter, we will have much bigger problems than Travis Wood no longer being on the roster.

Other: We invoke the rarely used Just Kidding Clause in Lackey's contract and then trade for Rays pitcher and stock up on reclamations.

But in all seriousness, we should be able to find takers for Hammel, Wood, or Coghlan if it came down to it. And I'd be ok with all or any of them if it's what it takes.
