Boy I'll be pretty happy if they can make Ross/Kimbrel happen without trading both of Castro/Baez. If they can make it happen without including Baez at all I'll be over the moon pretty much no matter what the final cost.

Exactly where I'm at.

 

Addendum: if they have to take Gyorko to make the latter happen, I'm not against it.

 

gyorko can give bryzzo russell baez all days off. has a lil pop for a pinch hitter.. i'd bite that bullet if it means not trading baez

LOL @ folks tossing around "Castro & Baez" as if they're interchangeable. Castro may in fact have negative value to the Padres, given how desperate they are to save money.

 

They're interchangeable in the sense that both have been rumored to be coveted by the Padres in recent days, and also in the sense that someone not named Jonathan Herrera needs to start in the middle infield for the next 2 months. That's what I(and presumably the others agreeing with me) mean.

if gyorko comes with ross/kimbrel and castro goes do the cubs throw in la stella? gyorko is an expensive backup but i cant see him starting over baez at 2b... that said even tho his hitting has been bad, he has some pop. looking at his picture though he reminds me of mark bellhorn for some reason.

Wilmer Flores has a .660 OPS and nowhere near the power profile or pedigree of Javy Baez. If Javy hit like him I'd be very sad.

also the fact that castro has actually managed to prove to be worth a [expletive] at some point (and for years) at the major league level has to count for at least something (in the comparison with baez)

gyorko is an expensive backup but i cant see him starting over baez at 2b

 

1) This notion that Gyorko's contract is some sort of financial cancer needs to stop. He makes $2 mil this year, less than Denorfia. He makes $4 mil next year, hardly a crippling debt to a team's payroll. If he can bounce back to just perform at league average production rates, he'll fulfill his end of his contract.

 

2) Trading Castro wouldn't mean the immediate call up of Baez who just returned from a somewhat serious injury. Gyorko let's them wait on Baez to get back in business before bringing him up.

Would probably almost certainly include McKinney or Torres (who knows, maybe both). Possibly Hendricks now that his name has been tossed out there as a surprise option.

Underwood, Torres, McKinney and Jimenez could be in play too. Basically anyone that's not Baez and not on the MLB roster(excluding Castro).

 

I don't think there's a mathematical explanation for being able to make that deal, but there wasn't a rational basis for the Matt Kemp deal either. Preller has made bold moves and if he's convinced Castro is a fresh start from returning to the 3 win SS he's been, then he's going to value him higher than a ZiPS projection will.

If I had to bet, this and the Carrasco/Teheran interest are just that. So was the "Houston and SD working on something big" and maybe Boston's interest in Ross too from the other side.
