the point of defensive independent stats is to have better (E)RA prediction, but that matters not one iota for purposes of a conversation purely focused on describing past events

 

unless you're making some argument that there was highly anomalous defensive performance, i guess

 

it's more predictive because it's a better indicator of how the pitcher has actually performed.

 

the fact that there's a disparity between that indicator of performance and the actual results is more often than not (but, yes, not always) the result of noise/luck, which is something i want to remove. i know what the actual results have been.
