Age. He's 8 months older than Rizzo. He's also been pretty consistent/injury-free too.

I don't have a big issue with the deal. Fangraphs did an article about Porcello's pay awhile ago, and it made plenty of sense. He's young, he's been durable, and he's had 3 solid, fairly consistent years. To be quite honest, I'm really fascinated how he does in Boston as I've always questioned if Detroit's development of him hampered him a bit. Furthermore, Boston's IF defense should be better than what he's had to deal with in Detroit.

Sounds like a solid deal for Porcello as well in that, he gets 4 years of quality pay, and hits the market at 31. If he's healthy, he should be in line for one more solid 3-4 year deal.

I really don't hate this for the Red Sox. I figured he was a good bet for 6/110 in FA so they pay a bit more annually to not have to deal with the health risk in the last two years.

If that's the going rate for career 98 ERA+ pitchers.....yeesh

He was also pitching with perhaps the single most unsuitable defense behind him given his pitching style. Put him on the Orioles and I bet he's a year to year 3.1 to 3.3 guy.

At the end of 2013 Homer Bailey had a 95 ERA+. In February of 2014 he signed a 6-year $105 million extension with a $25 million option year.

So yeah, it kind of is.
