devils/sports fans are so dumb. they're booing after goals because they play a song that isn't "rock and roll part 2," because that's been their goal song for like 30 years. problem is, gary glitter is a [expletive] pedophile and he uses proceeds from his most popular song to fund his legal defense and travel to various countries to diddle children. just change the song and learn to love the new one.

I didn't know the part about funding his legal defense. Yeah that's bad.

The Chiefs still use it, and I know others do also.

I don't know why the new playoff system is confusing me, but it is for some reason. So if I understand it correctly, the top 3 teams of each division make the playoffs, then 2 "wild cards" which are the next 2 best teams in the conference regardless of divisions. Then the division winner with the most points in the conference plays the lower wild card team, the other division winner plays the higher wild card team, and the 2-3 seeds in each division play each other. Then the 2nd round is essentially a division finals matchup, then finally a conference finals. Right? So using our current standings, the western conference would look like this (assume same number of games played):

http://espn.go.com/nhl/standings

Central:

1. Colorado (16)

2. Chicago (12)

3. St. Louis (11)

Pacific:

1. San Jose (17)

2. Anaheim (14)

3. Phoenix (12)

WC1: Los Angeles (12)

WC2: Nashville (11)

Pacific matchups: 1. San Jose vs. WC2. Nashville, 2. Anaheim vs. 3. Phoenix

Central matchups: 1. Colorado vs. WC1. Los Angeles, 2. Chicago vs. 3. St. Louis

2nd round matchups if higher seed wins all: 1. San Jose vs. 2. Anaheim, 1. Colorado vs. 2. Chicago

i really do not like that thomas vanek trade for the islanders. seems like too much to give up a first and second rounder in addition to a good player in moulson, for what might be about 70 games of vanek.

they pretty much gave up a 1st and a 2nd round pick for nothing. it's not so much about losing moulson as it's about not making an upgrade at all. on top of that, the picks are assets they could use to trade for something they need (like, say, i dunno, any goalie that isn't evgeni nabokov) and they sacrificed them to not upgrade a position that didn't need upgrading in the first place. just a weird trade. maybe garth snow thinks that tavares has gotten complacent while playing with his best buddy in matt moulson? tavares has been pretty weak so far this year. not sure that giving up a 1st and 2nd round pick to rectify that problem (or more likely, non-problem) makes much sense.

moulson and vanek are both 29 year old one-dimensional forwards on UFA deals. they've scored at a nearly identical rate since moulson became a regular in the Isles' lineup.

they're probably a legit contender with a goalie and they blew those assets on thomas vanek. mind-boggling move from garth snow given how good his moves have looked in the past few seasons.

Emery went full d-bag tonight.

The ref was an accessory. I'm shocked the Caps let their goalie, who pitched a shutout, get beaten. Knock the ref on his ass and take care of it. What a joke.

But...fighting in hockey is totally a necessary part of the sport, guys.

"He didn't want a fight but I said basically protect yourself," said Emery, the former Blackhawks goalie. "I didn't really have much of a choice."

Holtby declined to comment on the fight.

Very pleased that Bettman gave Columbus the '15 All-Star Weekend

It's only fair.

Sure, but I assumed that the NHL was like baseball and had the ASG's scheduled out 5+ years in advance

Wouldn't want to try to comment after getting punched in the back of the head 14 times.

Even more embarrassingly, Emery was named the third star of the game. He gave up four goals on 15 shots.

That was right out of Slap Shot

that sports writer who voted emery 3rd star should be banned from participating in those. what a complete idiot. and emery should get suspended; that was ridiculous. just a completely pathetic season from my flyers so far.

The rules, as they're currently written, don't call for a suspension for what Emery did. That's an easy fix for next time however. I could see a situation where a goalie might want to fight a forward but there is no reason ever for a goalie to skate the length of the ice to start punching the other goalie.

In other former Hawks news, it looks like Bolland may miss some time by having his leg cut by that Canuck's skate. I don't care how cumbersome those kevlar socks might be, the league should make people where them.

Commissioner Gary Bettman told the Columbus Dispatch no rule had been violated "to elevate things to the level of a suspension." He added, "I don't think anybody liked it, liked what it looked like. Fortunately it's not something that happens very often. But I'm sure it's something we'll focus on, particularly with the general managers." League general managers are scheduled to meet next week in Toronto.

@strombone1: Just an FYI. If Ray Emery ever decides to skate down the ice and try to fight me I'm getting the [expletive] out of dodge!!!

The West is now 73-39 against the East, with all 8 potential playoff teams with more points than any team in the East.

Of those 39 East victories against the West, 10 of them are Edmonton. Every other West team is above .500 vs the East.
