Carlos Villanueva seems a decent example.

Hendricks is not and never will be Greg Maddux, but Maddux helps to put Hendricks' incredible control in perspective.

Maddux MiLB BB/9: 2.7

Maddux MLB BB/9: 1.8

Hendricks MiLB BB/9: 1.5

Hendricks is also showing some signs that he can succeed at higher levels without wipe out stuff. He's at 120 IP at AA now and his K rate has held steady, he's been less hittable than he's been at any level(hit rate and HR rate), plus his profile is that which can succeed without killer K rates(54% GB% at AA).

He'll always have to prove himself over again at each ascending level, but at this juncture I don't see any obvious reason he won't be a major leaguer.

I really won't complain if he's given the inside track on a fifth starter job next year.

I know we've had a lot of success with the whole $5m-$9m mid-tier FA starting pitchers, but I'd rather us give at least one rotation spot to a competition involving guys like Hendricks and Cabrera next year.

Tom Glavine will be in the hall because of the changeup he pounded on the outside corner two or three times a hitter.

I certainly won't complain if Hendricks earns it, but to me he seems like the prototypical 6th/7th starter for next year. Has a purpose in AAA so he's not wasting time pitching there, doesn't profile as a great bullpen option, and has the service time/option flexibility to shuttle from Chicago to Iowa in case of injury.

That really depends on what he does at AAA, I think. The numbers he's putting up with the insane bb rate seem to indicate he's more than a Rusin/Raley-type pitcher. If he can continue to do what he's doing at the next level, he'll earn himself a spot.

His stuff is too meh for me to get excited.

Maddux got by on command and sink for a long time. Not saying Hendricks is Maddux, but it can be done.

Yeah. He'll just have to prove it to me at this point I guess.

When Maddux came up he had a mid 90s fastball.
