Soler's entire bonus was finished up this month too. He got 3 mill in January. Concepcion and his 1.2 mill needs to be included as well.

I believe E Jax is being paid $8m in bonus for 2013 + $11m = $19m. Why prorate his bonus?

Prorating is probably what makes sense from an accounting standpoint, but payroll figures are likely much more set by cash flows. Although we've been told the cubs will essentially operate ln a multi-year budget in regards to payroll. So it probably doesn't matter as long as the method is consistent.

For Soler I take it as a 6 million bonus with half deferred and paid in January. I just prorated the 6.

Thank you, I forgot Concepcion but I'm not sure he belongs on the list. He's not on the 40-man Roster, and I thought anyone with a MLB contract had to be (like Soler). So I assume it is a minor league contract. Any thoughts?

Stewart is 2.0, not 3.0.

Ooops. Thank you, corrected on first post.

No clue how they're handling Concepcion at this point, since they DFA'd him. Somehow though, he's still getting his money.

For comparison purposes mainly. This is the likely amount reported on the Cubs taxes and used in budgets, the amount the MLPA releases every year, the data used in USA Today's salary database, and other (not all) statistics pages.

Payroll is likely to be impacted by cash flow problems (see Frank McCourt) but that doesn't seem to be an issue for the Cubs. They have stated they will reinvest profits back into the team, so I think revenues is key. Increasing advertising revenues and new local TV revenues (though the big one isn't until 2019). Then it's a question of where they decide to spend it. Expand the front office and scouting; lose a few million a year in players. Spend $300 million on Wrigley renovations, less for player payroll. All necessary, but that will determine player budget. Obama raises taxes, less profits to reinvest (this is dedicated to the Politics thread).

I just looked at the transactions on the Cub site and he was recalled on October 4th and outrighted to Kane County in December. He had to pass through waivers (2.4 million reasons to pass through) so that explains why he is off the 40-man. You are right he is still getting his money and its not coming from Kane County. I just added him to the original post.

Any reason you didn't include Castillo, Barney and Rizzo considering they're all pretty much locks to be on the 25 man?

Their contracts haven't been signed yet, so there's no value to put there. Everyone that fills out the remaining 7 roster spots(since Soler and Concepcion aren't making the team) will be making the minimum or close to it.
