Who else is glad we didn't end up with Cherington last fall...

Not that this trade is the big strike against him. That Bailey deal is looking horrific.

White Sox are getting $5.5M in the deal, too.

Man the Redsox got fleeced.

If they could have gotten anything better, they would have. Normally, you'd expect them to give it until at least the deadline to try and boost his value, but they couldn't get him, A Gon, Middlebrooks, and Ortiz in the lineup at once, and Youk was the odd man out.

I am a bit surprised Theo didn't show any interest. Has Youk really fallen off that much?

Also, is Stewart really worth anything?

You are surprised that the Cubs didn't give up prospects to acquire a 33 year old player whose numbers have deteriorated and is a FA after next season?

He's a free agent after this year. Wouldn't surprise me if Theo showed interest this offseason though.

I'm not sure the Cubs would have had to give up prospects, considering all it took was a junkballer and a 25th guy /devil's advocate

I thought he was under contract for one more season.

Even if we could have got him for say Coleman and DeWitt, I'd just assume put Vitters at 3rd, or if he's not ready by then, give Stewart another year.

even if bailey was healthy, that trade would look bad.

Every appearance of "just assume" should come with a three-day ban. Just mind blowing.

Still I'm really not sure what use Youkilis would be for the Cubs. I guess if they could get him without giving up any meaningful pieces they could hope that a change of scenery gets him going again and attempt to trade him at the deadline next year. But it doesn't seem like a move Theo would make at this point, thus why it's not at all surprising that the Cubs didn't have any interest in trading for him.

plus his option for next year is $13m ($1m buyout). he'd really have to show you something in the second half to be kept on for that kind of money. more than likely, you'd just be trading for a veteran who's just going to block someone (granted, the somebodies he's blocking are all pretty lousy, but still) and then end up buying him out after this year to make him a free agent.

Aren't there some questions as to whether or not he can stay healthy playing third every day?
