If they could have gotten anything better, they would have. Normally, you'd expect them to give it until at least the deadline to try and boost his value, but they couldn't get him, A Gon, Middlebrooks, and Ortiz in the lineup at once, and Youk was the odd man out.

Still I'm really not sure what use Youkilis would be for the Cubs. I guess if they could get him without giving up any meaningful pieces they could hope that a change of scenery gets him going again and attempt to trade him at the deadline next year. But it doesn't seem like a move Theo would make at this point, thus why it's not at all surprising that the Cubs didn't have any interest in trading for him.

Still I'm really not sure what use Youkilis would be for the Cubs. plus his option for next year is $13m ($1m buyout). he'd really have to show you something in the second half to be kept on for that kind of money. more than likely, you'd just be trading for a veteran who's just going to block someone (granted, the somebodies he's blocking are all pretty lousy, but still) and then end up buying him out after this year to make him a free agent.
