It looks like Carpenter is through. Too old to run the surgery route again. I don't think Oswalt is an option. I know I would not sign the guy! Not even if he pitched for free.

well that is pretty stupid then.

Really? You would have a player on your team that will cost you games as long as he was FREE? C'mon!

He was worth 2.5 fWAR (in 139IP) last year and 4.7 in 2010 (in 211IP).

LAST year. I don't think he will get better with age. He wants a ton of cash and will clog a roster spot for some pitcher with a future. The Reds and Cards love to sign veteran geezers tho'....we will see.

that's not really relevant when you said that you wouldn't even take him if he were free. and considering that he was worth 7 wins the last 2 years, you're going out on a pretty shaky limb to say that he'd be a negative win pitcher in 2012.

So no other pitcher could match his wins for less money and a future? I'll stand on my shaky limb. 8-)

Correct. No pitcher that would pitch for free could match Roy Oswalt's production.

yes, it is very unlikely that the cardinals have a pitcher in the minor leagues who could be as good as roy oswalt would be this year. if so, that pitcher would be in the major leagues pitching every fifth day.

I don't see where you get all this confidence in Oswalt. The man is damaged goods.

Damaged goods that had a 3.69 ERA last year pitching half his games in Philly and lead the league in WHIP while placing 6th in the Cy Young vote in 2010.

Here's a list of qualifying rookie starting pitchers that had a better ERA than Oswalt last year:

3.69 is good for him? With the best team in baseball behind him?

Maybe the Cards could find someone to pay them to pitch for them, at least the money would be better. I greatly doubt they'd outperform Oswalt's production though.
