Could he be a decent option through trade assuming we don't have to give up too much? The Royals have Gordon and Franceur at the corners, and Lorenzo Cain could take over for Melky in center if they want to move him rather than extend him. Sure, he hasn't been great, but he seemed to have a breakout last season. Could have been a fluke, but didn't Theo himself say that the start of a players prime is 26? Melky turned 27 2 months ago. He might not have corner outfield power, or even be an upgrade over Byrd, for now anyway but if the price was right I'd definitely be all for giving him a chance.

I want Brett Jackson to be starting in center field next year

I was thinking a corner spot. I know he doesn't have corner power, but it could develope.

Byrd and Soriano.

We have enough holes to fill without creating new ones and wasting resources on holes that aren't there.

Byrd has one more year on his deal, right? If that is true the OF looks like Soriano LF, Byrd CF, Jackson RF or do Jackson and Byrd swap?

Trade Byrd. Melky has a higher ceiling, and Byrd could bring in a decent package, maybe similar to the Derosa package.

Which one is which?

A: Free agent after 2012, 4.8 WAR last 3 years, Best 3 seasons - 4.2, 1.7, 1.6

B: Free agent after 2012, 7.8 WAR last 3 years, Best 3 seasons - 4.4, 3.9, 3.2

Melky posted the best ISO of his career last year despite hitting LD at a rate below his career average and the league average. He struck out at a higher rate than any previous year, while walking at his lowest rate in any full season. I think there are still a lot of question marks with Melky.

If we could get Melky for something relatively insignificant, I might have interest. If they want any prospects of significance, I have no interest at all.

Melky's minor league career line: .296/.349/.420/.769 with a roughly 7% walk rate

Melky's major league career line: .275/.331/.398/.729 with a 7.4% walk rate

Last year could be a turning point for Melky power-wise, but he's never hit for close to this kind of power in his minor or major league career and his HR/FB ratio was second highest of his career (9.8%). During this career year, his OBP was right in line with his career numbers while his BB% dipped to 5% and his K% rose to 13.3%. He also had a career high BABIP at .332 (.299 career average). His IsoD was also at a career low of .034.

Considering he also is a poor defender according to UZR (-12.7 and -6.7 the past two years) and last year was the first time he provided any positive value on the basepaths since 2006, I don't see him as a good bet to continue to improve.

Going forward, Cabrera is a better bet to outproduce Byrd with the 7 year age advantage and all.

Maybe he is that 800 OPS guy he was last year, but I wouldn't count on it especially when combined with the less than stellar defense. I'd give him a shot over Byrd next year, but I certainly wouldn't give up more than a fringe prospect or two to get him.

For just next year? I wouldn't say that with any certainty.

In any case, Cabrera is potential candidate to be traded since the Royals have a crowded outfield and Lorenzo Cain waiting in the wings. But he won't come cheap. He's an asset they have to capitalize on, and with last year he's a pretty sure-fire bet to get draft compensation.

True. Looking at the Royals offense, they seem to have a top prospect at virtually every positon. What they need is pitching, ideally young pitching. McNutt and Cashner and certainly Garza are too much to give up for one year with a question mark. Maybe if we were to put together a package built around young pitchers like Jackson, Carpenter, Dolis, Russell, Coleman, Beliveau, Struck, Simpson, Searle etc. Maybe even Samardjzia or Wells Obviously not all of them, but you know what I mean. Maybe then turn around and flip Byrd somewhere else for a few more young pitchers and cash.

I might trade Simpson for Melky. Maybe. He just doesn't have much value and isn't a very good bet at all to improve upon what looks to be a lucky year last year.

If we were going to target a Royal who might be expendable, would it not make sense to target Billy Butler instead?

If Theo/Hoyer choose not to pursue Prince/Pujols, Butler could be an intriguing option. His WAR is hurt by pretty poor defense, but he's only 26 and has posted wOBAs of .369, .372, and .351 the past three seasons. I probably wouldn't want to pay what the Royals would demand, though.

butler is a nice player, but i'd really like my first baseman to hit for more power than he does.

Doesn't he play 3rd as well?

No. Some would consider it a stretch to even call him a first baseman. He's David Ortiz, not Chris Davis.

he's 6'1" and weighs 240 lbs, and his nickname is "country breakfast." watching him play third base would be high comedy.
