Because of the way last night's game ended, it looks like Philly might need a first baseman next year. A one-year or two-year deal for Carlos Pena would seem to work. And if I were him, wouldn't it be better to play for a real contender than for a team like the Cubs, rebuilding on the fly? Of course, after Prince leaves Milwaukee, they'll be interested in him, as well.

I'm not sure we should pursue Pena anyway, but if we were interested, this just makes it more costly.

Bryan LaHair anyone?

To be honest, if we don't make a big move next year, we'll suck anyway, may as well be LaHair. I mentioned at one point to see what Morneau would cost, but it didnt go over well. Still, I'm intrigued. The concussion made 2011 a lost yeR for him, but I think he's a FA after last year, and The Twins have Parmalee behind him. If Fielder or Pujols aren't to be, I'd be interested in trying to trade for Morneau and Liriano. Gardy seems to love his scrappers, so maybe guys like Barney and Campana would appeal to them. Obviously, it would take a lot more in terms of prospects as well before I'm accused of suggesting Barney, Campana, and Russell for Morneau and Liriano

I wouldn't be surprised if Votto gets traded this year in a blockbuster deal.

I'd be very surprised if it was within the division.

Morneau is signed through 2013.

Still. He's a risk I'd be willing to take. Twins are likely losing Kubel, Cuddyer, and Thome's gone. Could be time for them to re-stock. Besides, every time the Twins trade or lose a top player, they just seem to get better.

The thing is, Morneau has been hurt the last two years. Do you take on a contract through 2013 for a guy like that, entering his age 31 season? I was a big fan of Morneau, but it's a risky proposition at this stage, particularly since they'd likely want good talent in return.

It's a risk. See what we could get him for. Concussions are not easy to come back from. Ryan Church and Aaron Hill are 2 examples of promising careers that were derailed by concussions. Hopefully Morneau can recover.

Side note: wasn't it Rickey Weeks who took him out at 2nd that caused it?

Well they would be looking for a #1 starter for him, so obviously we couldn't get him and probably nobody else in our division could pay that price. Something like Shields might be the beginnings of a trade. If only we knew somebody who could work out a 3-way deal. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Why are you assuming that Howard isn't playing first for Philly next year?

It depends on whether his Achilles tendon is torn or not.

Even if Howard was out for the season or part of it, they wouldn't be looking to sign someone to a 2-3 year deal, they'd want someone for 1 year. Someone like Derrek Lee would do the trick, or perhaps a trade for James Loney.
