CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts made the unconventional move this week of giving a new four-year contract to the team's vice president of player personnel, Oneri Fleita, without having a general manager in place, sources told ESPNChicago.com on Saturday.

because apparently the Tigers were going to sign him. A shame they didn't. I hate Fletia this is also a sign to possible GMs that Ricketts is going to be a meddler down the road. He should have waited. Maybe he's already chosen a GM and they were alright with this signing, that's highly doubtful though. Ricketts needs to stay out of baseball decisions and let the GM handle stuff like this. I can't imagine any new GM would have wanted to keep Fleita.
