I wonder how many other MLB teams call press conferences mid season to talk about the direction of the franchise.

Just another pathetic sign of a pathetic organiztion.

YEAH!!

I guess the good thing about it is that (maybe) they recognize there is some misconception regarding the direction of the franchise :)

Maybe they are listening to the fans.

This just doesn't strike me as a good thing.

Listening to the fans would be just about the worst thing the Cubs could do.

This whole thing is kinda bizarre. I'm just trying to envision what it is they can announce/discuss in 10 days, that they can't talk about right now.

It's not like a firing fits into that mold. Or a hiring either.

It's possible that the entire Ricketts family is involved in discussions to either fire Hendry or hire Gillick/team president and it was Tom who decided to take a personal tour of the farm systems to get an up close look of how things are being run there. He then could be reporting back to the family and they use that report in their discussions on whether or not to make whatever change they're considering.

The key to the report is "within" 10 days, so it could be anytime within that time frame - it doesn't have to be a full 10 days if they make this hypothetical decision sooner.

Im guessing that this will be a non-event. He'll talk about how disappointed he is in the team's results this season, that he's spending more on player development to try and reverse the franchise's fortunes, he and his family are committed to winning, etc.

It still begs the question of why they're issuing this "we'll have something to talk about next week" announcement.

Say nothing until you have something to talk about, then talk about it.

They aren't issuing anything, it's Levine quoting an anonymous source. Or if you prefer, Ricketts' PR guy answering a question asked of him.

If you want media attention you have to notify people ahead of time.

The Cubs have the full attention of their numerous beat reporters and TV partners whenever they want/need it. A few hours is all it takes to schedule a presser.

Fair enough. Where this is coming from has been ambiguous all along.

Yeah, but this is about the FUTURE OF THE ORGANIZATION. You have to let that marinate and stew and fester. It's all about showmanship. It's all about ZAZZ!!!!

A source close to the Ricketts.

I can't wait for that become a reality, but this is probably the absolute worst possible time to announce that.

Besides, aren't we still at least a couple of years away from the WGN and Comcast deals expiring?

So basically, it will be a web of PR mumbo jumbo.

I didn't say they are going to do what the fans want. I said they are listening. Big difference.

I'm hoping they realize there is a lot of unrest with the fan base. There aren't a lot of "as sucks" kind of fans anymore.

You can't "catch 'em all on WGN" now, so I think the world will continue spinning.

WGN 720.

The current TV deals expire in 2019, but could theoretically be bought out.

Good. Get the team on track and get a [expletive] channel so it can get even better. Signing Pujols or Fielder would be a huge step in that direction.

Yup, they really cut the WGN games. I think it's just under 50 this year.

While owning 20% of CSN Chicago helps their bottom line, it is killing interest for Cub fans outside of the Chicagoland area. I'm all for them to put the CSN games back on WGN America and having this silly local blackout rule lifted for the out of towners. If I'm in LA and don't want to watch the Dodgers or Angels, I should be able to watch the Cubs.

By the way, tv ratings for the Cubs are down 14% from last year and down 47% from 2008.
