I don't get your point. It's probably pretty dumb.

Just because a song is purposely whimsical/cheesy doesn't disqualify it from scrutiny

Who was saying it was a good song? If anything, you made a good point on behalf of the people arguing for it. It's supposed to be dumb and cheesy and easy to remember.

I've got good memories with the song, even though it hasn't been a "Cub tradition" that long. My daughter has been singing that song since she was 3 or so, which means it makes me smile when I think of it. My kids run around the house singing it when the Cubs win. I don't have any problems with it, and kinda like it.

What I don't like is that damned slogan that the Ricketts brought with them "It's a Way of life" or whatever it is. Don't these guys know the historical futility of our beloved Cubs? They might as well just flip us off.

I will admit that my opinions about the song are biased. I'm off the age that my first real memories of the Cubs were watching games with my dad when they had a shot in 1984 (when I was 5) and they broke out the song right around then, so it's burned into my brain because of that. They dropped it within a few years, but I was happy to hear it back because of the personal connection.

I used to have a cassette tape (anyone remember those?) when I was a kid that had all Cubs/baseball related songs on there that I used to listen to all the time. I think it came out in the mid to late 80's and "Go Cubs Go" was on there. It brings back some great memories for me, too. But the bottom line is that the song is only played when the Cubs win, so no one should ever bitch about that song being played at Wrigley.

I loathe it. I hated it when we were good, I hate it now. There was never a single point where I liked it. When we were good it came off as arrogant and borderline ignorant. And then now, when we're sad-bad, the "...to be the best in the national league" part just kills me. Someone end this.

Whatever dude, imagine if you're like a reds fan or something and it's your first time to Wrigley, and you're listening to a team 20 games under .500 sing about being the best in the league. Nice first impression of our fan base. I could go on and on about this, I'm sick and [expletive] tired of being this lol fanbase that we're perceived as. The casual fan thinks the usual Cub fan is a beer drinking idiot, Im sick of it. I want to be the caged [expletive] animal that takes everything seriously and just mauls teams and fans. [expletive] that stupid song. I want to be in first place talking about pillaging and scorched earth theories.

I'm pretty sure that if I go see any MLB team win a game at home there's going to be some kind of celebration for the fans at the end. Hell, a lot of them involve fancy video screens and fireworks and mascots and the like regardless of how bad the team is overall, so I think the Cubs are pretty safe in there "some people are singing and sort of dancing, kinda"-routine. Y'know, if you're REALLY worried about being embarrassed.

Guys, I just found something INCREDIBLY embarrassing. In 2008 the Reds finished 5th of 6 in the NL Central with a miserable 74-88 record, yet here is a video of ACTUAL CELEBRATION during that season after a walkoff win. Please note the excessive cheering and jubilation, the humiliating fireworks, some kind of embarrassing song playing in the background AND the video scroll lit up to say "WE WIN!!!" In fact, just the very existence of this celebratory video is a horrible blow to the dignity of Reds fans everywhere. I can only imagine and hope that the Cleveland Indians fans in attendance properly chastised the Reds fans for their embarrassing behavior.

For the record, it doesn't say that we ARE the best in the NL. Just that we have the power & the speed to be.

They got the power, they got the speed

To be the best in the National League

Does this part bug you too?

Baseball time is here again

You can catch it all on WGN

Most of the games aren't even on WGN anymore.

And spend any time at all on this board and you'll know the following quote is 100% untrue.

Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.

Steve Goodman wrote the song and it's not like he was some hack. Many consider his 'City of New Orleans' to be the greatest in a long line of train songs. He also wrote David Allen Coe's signature song, 'You Never Even Call Me by my Name.' I really enjoy his smokin' bluegrass version of 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' with Jethro from Homer and Jethro. And of course Goodman wrote 'Dying Cub Fan's Last Request.'

Goodman had a long and distinguished career as a singer/songwriter and he was one of the greatest Cub fans of all time. GO CUBS GO is a fun song Steve wrote for the team back in the early 1980s. Enjoy it or just leave it be.

This is really weird.

I read that Goodman's ashes were placed under home plate at Wrigley. I'm a Goodman fan, and as stated already - who cares what any other fans think? F them, especially if they are Reds fans.

Man this thread is full of killjoys.

Also, I like the Eddie Vedder song...it's lyrics are no more or less ridiculous than the Go Cubs Go lyrics. I'm not sure how you can be ok with Go Cubs Go but not like the Eddie Vedder song based on it's lyrics.

Haha yes if you're looking down your nose at folks goofing around and having fun at a wedding, then you're stuffy.

My advice would be, next time stay home and replay William and Kate on the DVR, and pretend you're royalty too.

Or better yet, move to England and become a cricket fan.
