And he struggled again tonight; 1.2IP 4H 2ER 2k/1bb. Szczur is 0/2 with a BB and a run scored in his debut. Ha is 1/2 with a double so far in his first game back with Tennessee.

Amaya and Geiger had 3 Ks and Hernandez and DeVoss had 2 Ks though the latter 2 did get a double each.

Arizona Phil"]Amaya is a pure hitter with a line-drive stroke. A lot like D. J. LeMahieu in that respect. He's a below-average defender, though, and is probably limited to playing 2B-3B (his best position is 3B).

Marco Hernandez is a SS (right now), and while he has the range to play there, he might not have the arm to stay there long-term. Hernandez is a switch-hitter (he learned to switch-hit at AZ Instructs last fall), and while he really drives the ball LH (even showing occasional HR power at EXST), he is more of a slap-hitter when he hits RH (although he does hit for a decent average RH). But he's just a very good all-around hitter, even better than Amaya. And Hernandez has decent patience at the plate, too.

Oliver Zapata reminds me (physically) of Kirby Puckett. He's a bowling ball with plus-speed and a good eye at the plate. VERY patient. He's a good hitter, but he has no HR power because he has consciously tried to shorten his swing to make more-consistent contact. Zapata was doing great as the AZL lead-off hitter until Taiwan Easterling arrived, but I would think that Zapata will go back to the lead-off spot once Easterling gets promoted. Zapata plays all three OF positions, and while he has a plus-arm, he is a below-average OF defender (almost Alfonso Soriano-like at times), although it's certainly not for lack of effort.

BTW, Dong-Yub Kim may be the worst defensive OF I have ever seen, and I have seen some bad ones over the years. Unfortunately he's a really lousy defensive first-baseman, too.

Also has some stuff on Geiger and if you scroll down, even more on Dong-Yub Kim.

Decent game for Ben Wells. 5 Ip 6 H 1 BB 4 K 2 ER

And Logan Watkins with another 2-4, average up to .291. I know hes young, but I cant help but notice that he doesnt hit for much, if any power. Does have his share of extra base hits though. Could he be the second coming of another NSBB favorite who happens to play for the Cardinals?

Hitting .290/.392/.475 with 10 HR. Similar to last years numbers. How did the Rays end up with him? Was he just a minor league FA? Doubt hes someone we'll ever really miss, but just curious. Only 25 too, I thought he was closer to 27.

Peoria Journal-Star"]Del Valle, a 21-year-old Cuban defector making his second Chiefs start, pitched four scoreless innings. His fastball speed was clocked as high as 92 mph.

“It’s good to see those guys come in and contribute right away,” said Chiefs manager Casey Kopitzke. “Tonight, Del Valle didn’t back down. He went deep in counts and he kept coming at ’em in the zone and gave us four scoreless. Good job by him.”

Del Valle struck out five and walked none, yielding three hits.

“Good strike zone (location) with my fastball,” he said through interpreter Ricardo Medina. “I was working ahead, for the most part, against hitters. I was very happy with my performance today and want to keep improving every day.”

Arizona Phil"]A speedy switch-hitting 2B-CF, DeVoss is the only Cubs 2011 draft pick selected in the first 15 rounds to sign so far. (He was a so-called "draft-eligible sophomore," because he turns 21 within 90 days of the draft).

DeVoss was the DH in his first professional game, hitting 7th in the order. He struck out (swinging) in his 1st and 3rd ABs, grounded out to short in his 2nd AB, and flied out to the warning track in RF in his 4th AB, before crushing his game-winning walk-off double off the RF fence in the 10th. DeVoss displayed more power and loft in his swing (at least hitting LH) than I had thought he would show.

Meanwhile, Cubs 2011 27th round draft pick Taiwan Easterling (Florida State) lined a single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to extend his hitting streak to six games (he is now hitting 500/517/714 through his first seven pro games covering 29 PA). The 22-year old FSU Seminole also made a slick diving catch in CF for the first out in the top of the 3rd, and threw out a runner trying to advance from 2nd base to 3rd base on a pick-off attempt overthrow to end the top of the 3rd.

Easterling is clearly more advanced than might have been expected, considering he did not play baseball his first two years at Florida State. But he was named "Mr. Baseball" in Mississippi in his senior year at Oak Grove HS and played on several post-season HS All-Star teams and in showcase games, and was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 6th round of the 2007 June Draft, before deciding to enroll at FSU. So it's not like he's just now learning how to play baseball.

Easterling received a reported $200K signing bonus (about equivalent to "4th round money"), which can be spread over five years since he is a two-sport player (he is also a WR on the Seminole football team). It is unclear at this time whether Easteling will return for his senior season at FSU to play football (and if he does, he would be a 5th year redshirt senior).
