really like what penalver and candelario are doing in the DSL, hitting for solid average and showing great walk rates along with some doubles power. hopefully they'll be ready to handle the AZL next year at age 18.

Penalver intrigues me since he has a low error rate compared to other shortstops who come through the DSL; I think he's only made 7 errors so far. I'm really curious to see what the defensive reports look like for him.

Justin Bour hit HR #17 today. Hopefully the Cubs move him up soon.

beeler was fine (7 ip, 6 h, 3 er, 1 bb, 2 k, 2 hr, 15 go/2 fo)... beliveau was his usual pile of awesomeness (2 perfect innings, 4 K's) then dolis crapped the bed in the 10th.

Not to be an ass, but I will be absolutely stunned if Simpson ever amounts to anything.

I know he was sick last year and is still getting his weight/health together, but he hasn't done anything positive thus far in his short career.

The fact that he went in the first round where no one had him projected -- makes it all the more tougher to swallow.

I'd love to be wrong. But, he is really frustrating.

How much longer do we have to wait for Beliveau to be called up?

He was born in '87 -- not exactly a young guy.. How much more grooming needs to be done?

if the minor league box score is right, rhee pitched by far his best game in who knows how long... complete game shutout in a 7-inning game. 7 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 1 bb, 6 k, 1 hbp, 5 go/4 fo.

the pitching lines for peoria:

simpson: 1.2 ip, 6 h, 6 er, 2 bb, 0 k

jung: 2.1 ip, 4 h, 5 er, 3 bb, 1 k, 1 hr, 2 hbp, 1 wp

francescon: 1.2 ip, 7 h, 7 er, 1 bb, 3 k, 2 hr

Hayden Simpson doesn't even make it out of the second. Ugh.

jung and francescon followed and were each terrible... peoria is down 15-4 in the 5th inning.

When all is said and done, Simpson might end up a bigger waste of a 1st round pick than Mark Pawalek.

Rhee, on the other hand tossed a 7 inning complete game shutout with 6 K 1 BB 2 H.

Hes a lefty, and we already have 3 in the pen. ones a stud, ones decent, and ones being paid a lot of money despite the fact that hes bad. Believeau, Rhoderick, and Dolis all look like they should be in the big league pen in 2012 along with Gooz, Carpenter, and of course Marshall and Marmol. Could be quite a pen.

I am more interested to see how Simpson finishes the season and pitches next year. A bad case of Mono can be devastating for an athlete and takes a long time to come back from.

pierre lepage ended up being the most effective pitcher for peoria.

not that they're likely to be real prospects or anything, but rafael lopez and Klafczynski hit their first professional homers for boise tonight. reggie golden has a pair of walks in two PA's... really liking the patience from him so far; lack of patience has seemed to be the undoing for a lot of cub high school-drafted hitters.

Rhee had a 10 K game about a month ago which was probably a better game (though he gave up 2 ER in 5 in that game).

Liria off to a solid start for Boise too. 2 scoreless and hitless with 4 Ks and no walks.

It could well be that Wilken and company were wholly justified in picking Simpson where they did. However, there probably will come a point in Simpson's struggles where I have to wonder whether he will ever get back to 100%. Simpson may never get back to that point.

As I've said before, I'm willing to give him a pass on this season. He will have the entire offseason to work out, get back into playing shape, and prove himself next season. However, I am concerned.

That's what happens when your scouting director makes reach picks in the first round. I believe Pawalek, Colvin and Simpson were considered reaches.

Posted
pawelek was not considered a reach.

He actually fell because of signability concerns. Plus, Wilken wasn't the scouting director when the Cubs took him.

Colvin was a reach by about 5-15 picks, depending on the reports you believe. He had a lot of late helium coming into the draft.

The 13 Ks in 47 ABs bear watching. Golden was seen as a possible high K guy when he was drafted, as memory serves.

Still, he's off to a promising start.

yeah i can live with the K's if he hits for power and draws a nice amount of walks. unless you get a freak like pujols you're going to have to accept the K's that come with a patient approach and swinging for power.

liria has 5 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 6 k. hopefully a couple of our young latin american starters at short-season ball (peralta, liria, cruz) can step up to peoria next year and become established as good prospects.
