I'm pretty much at the point where my top 3 would go Buxton, Correa, Almora.

Wow. Not sold on ANY of the pitching?

I definitely like Buxton + Correa more than any of the college pitchers. They'd be 1-2 for me for certain. At that point, it becomes risk/reward for Almora vs pitchers. I guess I'm gunshy on pitchers these days due to injury risk, but I tend to value hitters more at that point in the draft. Plus I don't see any of the pitchers being no-doubters.

I think Appel has a pretty high floor. I think all 3 have bigtime ceilings obviously. For some reason though, I'm kind of finding myself hoping for Fried today. Of course, that'll change tomorrow, I'm sure. There's 8 guys out there I'm perfectly fine with at 6. I am thinking at this point, Correa is the biggest upside guy in the draft. But I can't see him lasting to us either.

All pitchers have a floor of shoulder injury.

I'm only a casual adherent to TINSTAAPP but Appel certainly doesn't have a high floor.

Assuming health, I think he's almost a definite 3/4. You disagree?

Even with health, pitchers can lose stuff quickly.

Even with health, some pitchers just can't sufficiently refine their command.

Appel hasn't shown consistent ability to miss college bats. He could end up as a marginal pro.

All that said, I'm going to be happy with whomever we grab at #6. If it's one of the college guys, I'll be thrilled to have a potential ace in the minors for the first time in a few years (I really don't count Simpson).

Yes. @infraren: heard Correa getting second workout from #Twins. If Hou takes Buxton, any chance they take Correa ahead of Appel? #mlbdraft

Agreed with Tim.

Appel isn't on the Price/Cole/Bauer/Hultzen level of college prospect.

Appel has better stuff, Hultzen has better command, control, a deeper arsenal and is more likely to achieve his ceiling. I'd rather have Hultzen than Appel.

There's a reason no one would take Appel over the top 7 or 8 picks in last year's draft. I should have included Pomeranz in my initial list of college top 10 picks in recent years who I'd rather have than Appel.

I think the best case scenario for us is this:

1 - Houston - Appel

2 - Twins - Buxton

3 - Mariners - Zunino

4 - O's - Gausman

5 - KC - Zimmer

And we get our choice between Correa, Fried, Almora.

Correa lasting to 6 is extremely slim at this point. I think we have a better chance at Zimmer.

I don't think it's extremely slim. It seems like if he gets past the Mariners, he'll be available at 6. Keith Law and Jim Callis have Correa available at 6 (and the Cubs passing in favor of Almora) while Kevin Goldstein has Correa going at 3. All 3 released their most recent mocks yesterday.

Maybe, but it just seems like he is the major helium guy from what I've been reading. It doesn't help that the first three teams are desperate for high ceiling position players.

Actually, the Twins are desperate for pitchers but the thinking is, they can't pass on Buxton if he's available. Who knows with the Astros? It sounds like ownership wants a prospect who will arrive in the bigs quickly (which is why so many think Appel will be their choice) but the GM seems more interested in going best player, ETA be damned.

Mariners definitely want a position player, especially since they wanted one last year and went with Hultzen. We have to hope they pop Zunino.

Have or will the Cubs bring Almora to Wrigley for a workout/interview?
6. Chicago Cubs: Albert Amora, OF, Mater Academy (FL)

Pretty much every eyeball in the Cubs front office has been spotted at Almora's late-season games, and his private workout was impressive. One source said this afternoon, “If the Cubs had the No. 1 pick in the entire draft, they might take Almora."

Not sure if it was at Wrigley or we flew to him, but yes.

Thanks Raisin. I guess he profiles as a reliever at this point?

He's been a swing man for Stanford all year. If you draft him, I'd start him for sure. He's come on of late but the control is still a massive issue.

I'd imagine he might be an expensive sign for where he should be drafted (after round 3) since he's a sophomore and he's at Stanford.

I just scanned through BA's top 500 and he wasn't on it, so my guess is you're right and there's not much of a chance he leaves. On a different note, without knowing a single thing about him, there's an OF from Miami Dade we've gotta draft. His first name is Yogey.......

Zunino hit a HR today to left center against Georgia Tech.
