This guy was a [expletive] [expletive]. He told like several co-workers of his various plans of amateur mass destruction and the guy went to the feds and they strung him along for months. He was not capable of doing [expletive] anyway, IMO

obviously he was capable, because if it was real it would have done damage. You don't have to be suave, discreet and highly intelligent to cause a lot of damage.

It would seem like getting your hands on a real, functioning bomb is like 99% of the equation here.

Times Square bomber couldn't get it done and had the materials. Sometimes, all you need is an idiot, motivated or no, to screw up a plan.

Not hard at all.

A lot harder than walking to a trash can.

Execute this guy. Send a message.

(and I'm not a fan of capital punishment)

Given the above, I don't believe this even a little bit

I do as I feel the same way.

Well it's the dumbest [expletive] thing I've ever heard

How is this dumb, or even confusing? I'm not a fan of capital punishment, in most cases, because sometimes the evidence isn't there. People have been executed for crimes they didn't actually commit. This guy was 100% intending on inflicting mass murder. I said "execute" him... to "send a message" to any other wannabe terrorist out there that even if you fail, we will put you down.

I'm not a fan of abortion either, but I still think that a woman who is raped has every right to one. Is that the dumbest [expletive] thing you've ever heard too, or entirely reasonable? Can you not agree with something 99% of the time, but still accept it in the other 1%? I think you can.

I'm also not a fan of the Phillies in the slightest, but I would prefer them to win a World Series over the Yankees.

Says the man standing outside of Jim Hendrys office with a suitcase. Waiting.

Yeah, terrorists who mostly have no problem killing themselves to accomplish their mission...IF YOU FAIL, WE WILL PUT YOU DOWN.

This guy left a backpack in a trash can and left, it wasn't like he was positioning himself as a suicide bomber, so I'd call it a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong shot that that guy would've killed himself to carry out this attack.

Didn't say he was a suicide bomber. My point is that killing crappy wannabe terrorists won't do anything to convince "real" terrorists otherwise, and the death penalty doesn't deter idiots.

Yeah, you kinda did. You made it seem like this guy would have no problem killing himself in order to succeed his objective, which doesn't appear to be accurate, since he tried to get away with it. And I never said that it would convince "real" terrorists otherwise, rather, wannabe terrorists who are stupid enough to tell people of their plans. Those people seem stupid enough to be swayed otherwise.

But I know this argument is pointless since you are NSBB's #1 never wrong poster, so I concede. You win. Back to baseball talk.

So, like I said, the death penalty doesn't deter stupid people. If it did it would seemingly be a simple matter to show how it works as an effective deterrent, but that evidence doesn't exist, so why would would make sense to conclude that it would deter "wannabe terrorists" when it doesn't effectively deter anyone else?

But yes, let's go back to talking baseball in the thread about the failed bomber.

why wait?

So you can hand him the locked briefcase, tell him it's full of twinkies, and look back to see him insanely trying to rip it open while you run away before it goes off. Duh.

Oh cool, this got interesting. First of all, Mojo's counter to your "deterrent" argument is right on. The threat of incarceration or death is not going to stop a soul who has the stones to commit acts of terror U.S. soil. But, I digress

You tell me you aren't a fan of capital punishment because sometimes innocent people get killed, and in the same breath you tell me that this man deserves to die because of the deaths he INTENDED to cause? Seems to me that if you were in favor of executing a man who didn't successfully take a human life, you'd be gung ho about killing all the men who clearly did.

I'm not with you on your on your abortion argument, either, but I object to your implication that I see such things in black and white. It couldn't be farther from the truth.
